The "Big Five", who are the countries who as a result of paying most
towards it, go straight into the final.

All the members. Some pay a lot more than others.

GB wouldn't ever be in the final otherwise.

There's scope for a Western European Song Contest.

Some countries do seem to be (literally) only marginally European; Israel is
Middle East, not European. If we're having ...stans in, why not Pakistan?

They haven't joined the EBU :-)

All the North African countries & Jordan are members too
http://www.ebu.ch/en/ebu_members/actives/index.php

The Vatican is also a member.

Isn't it time we had European Song Contest entry from the Vatican.

The Vatican's Swiss Guard could provide backing dancers:

Ah, yes, but I don't think that would meet the contest rules. It is a
song contest not a singing contest. The songs have to be new.

apparently it does still work out as the cheapest 3 hours of prime time
event television of the year though.

And Pakistan really, really, really does have weapons
of mass destruction.

And the man who helped the CIA in tracking down Bin Laden's
location has just been sentenced to 33 years behind bars for
providing the information.

To Ireland's eternal shame, that didn't stop Dana winning it, even
though her song was a plagiarism of "My Favourite Things" from "The
Sound Of Music".

But at least you can still remember the tune, and probably nearly all of
the words. This is more than can be said for most of the entries for the
past ten years.
