I was one of the early subscribers to On Digital and the thing that killed
it for me was the unreliability of the digital signal - getting a pixelated
image every time the thermostat switched, a car drove past, a neighbour cut
the grass and so on caused me to get out after one year and move to Sky.

So nothing to do with any piracy issues.

This was all sloshing around at the time. Hate Murdoch as I do (for
monopolising English language satellite TV) I don't buy this one because: -

On Digital encryption was based on Canal+ encryption that had been hacked
(or leaked internally) with codes posted for at least ten years.

On Digital's business model was a disaster waiting to happen (and it did).

$ky's analogue encryption was phenomenally weak and easily got around (no
hack just line reconstruction on the fly) and the sound was not encrypted at
all.

Sky would have risked damaging their own business by if the hackers had
bitten the hand that fed them (very likely).

Far more likely is that the hackers were at some point Israeli state spooks
hired to break encryption on neighbouring hostile states' security services
and they did a bit of moonlighting to watch "Journal du Hard" and VO XXX
films on Canal+.

So Murdoch’s evil empire conspired to use computer hacking to bring down
its rival ITV? Sorry Panorama, you got it wrong and Sally Bercow must
have conveniently forgotten why people programmed or bought ‘dodge’
ONdigital cards. ONdigital carried Sky1, Sky Sports and Sky Movies along
with other lesser channels. Sky was the jewel of ITV’s digital offering
so why would SKY’s owners want people to view their programmes without
paying? If you just wanted to view terrestrial channels in Digital
ONdigital gave out free cards. At that time it was the only way that
viewers in some areas to get channels 4 and 5.
I still have my programmer and the two cards I used to use.
Why did the Panorama programme not cover illicit cards and chipped boxes
used by cable viewers to get subscription channels free? The cable rival
was surely more of a threat to Sky than ITV.

But more Sky Channels were carried by NTL cable than Ondigital.
So by your argument Sky wouldn't want to undermine NTL either

I wouldn't be a bit surprised NTL cable key hacks were being
put out by Sky backed hackers too.

To me it did not make sense for them to undermine their own product.
I'm told that cable boxes can no longer be hacked. Where we used to live
a local TV repair shop did most of its business selling chipped boxed
and dodgy cards.
