I'll just unlurk for a minute: Hello everyone.

You don't have to be a real geek to use Linux nowadays.Ubuntu/
Mythbuntu works, in most cases, out of the box. Do a side-by-side
install with your w*nders and you haven't lost anything anyway.
All my computers have been free of m$oft for many years and hardware
is no problem but always check before buying some cheap TV cards!
Three months virus-free computing with Linux and you'll never look
back! Good Luck.

It's quite good for general purpose use too. Using 64 bit Ubuntu on a quad
core processor and watching a wordprocessor load in a fraction over one
second is pretty impressive.

And you don't need to change everything at once either. The aforementioned
wordprocessor on the aforementioned Ubuntu machine can quite happily open
and edit files on my main Windows machine, by wireless. It doesn't seem to
matter that they are running on different operating systems.

That is somewhat less impressive if you are used to using TechWriter as
your document processor, running on RISC OS. :-)

However I'd agree that for more demanding (in data bashing terms) tasks
that a modern linux/hardware setup can be pretty impressive. Flexible as
well as fast. That's why I use Linux systems for the bulk of my work with
audio. (Fingers crossed, a new box is supposed to arrive later today!)

Slainte,

Jim

Such is progress. WordPerfect opens here in about a second on a 12-year
old 400 Mhz machine running Win98...

That's about the normal speed for 64 bit systems on quad core
processor. My 64 bit Windows 7 system on a quad core loads Word in a
fraction under a second and Excel in well under a second.

Yes, I have Win2k running on P2 and P4 boxes as well as XP, an install
of Ubuntu on a Celeron laptop, various versions of MS-DOS and DR-DOS on
8086, 286, 386 and 486 machines, plus Windows 3.1 and Win 95. Etc.

I was considering making the quad core machine dual-boot like the others, but
did a clean install of 64 bit Ubuntu as soon as I'd finished building it
because I couldn't wait to see what it could do. It was so fast and so stable,
and does everything I need it for, that I never bothered to order a copy of
Windows for it. So that's about £80 saved...

I'll keep my main Windows machine and the media centre as long as they last,
but when the time comes to replace them, whatever Microsoft has to offer had
better be really good or really cheap to persuade me to spend my money on it.
Already I'm not hearing good things about Windows 8, so I wonder what the
future of software you actually have to pay for can possibly be?

SSDs - really, if you have the cash.

What's the spec, if you don't mind me asking?
