Default LCD TV Buyers Beware...

Do not buy from digitalgear on Ebay!

I bought a Sharp Aquos 32" (LC-32G4U) from them over the phone (not on
EBay directly) and the TV turned out to be defected. It's simply not
working and has a little dent on the right speaker. However, they
insist it is new and will not take it back until I talk to Sharp. Also,
I thought I bought a 5-year extended warranty but the owner (Mr.
Stevens) said it was a 4-year Platinum with 1-year manufacture warranty
that made it a 5-year.

Since I didn't buy it off Ebay (major mistake), I can't leave any
negative feedback on the site to warn people and have to do it here.
Take my advise and stay away from them.

That sounds about right. I know it sucks, but I don't know that you have a
good argument over the seller wanting you to take up warranty claim with the
manuf. I bought a Sony HDTV about 6 months ago and it quit working a couple
months after I bought it. While I had ordered straight from Sony, I talked
to a guy at a local AV store and he said that even if I had bought from
him-I would have to go to Sony myself. Standard procedure for a
"manufacturers" warranty.

I thought I bought a 5-year extended warranty but the owner (Mr.

So, you do get 5 years of warranty coverage? If there is 1 year manuf.
warranty, who warranties the other 4 years? Or is it 1 year standard manuf.
warranty with 4 years extended manuf. warranty? If so, you will always have
to take up the warranty issues with the manufacturer. At work, I have
probably made over 100 warranty claims easily, on equipment we use. On each
claim I always go straight to the manufacturer-in general thats how it
works.

Since I didn't buy it off Ebay (major mistake), I can't leave any

From what Sears told me and what I have heard from others who also bought
their extended TV warranty, they do their own Sears service policy repairs
from day one. When I was considering buying a TV from Ultimate and they
explained their service policy to me, that was their deal, as well -- that
their people would handle any and all problems from the beginning, if you
had bought their service policy.

Yes, if you bought a SEARS extended warranty or ULTIMATE extended warranty
(never heard of Ultimate myself). But if its a manufacturers warranty, the
manufacturer is the one who does the warranty. I imagine some big stores
might be nice enough to box up and ship a set back to the manufacturer for
warranty service, but that's just being nice and keeping a good reputation,
I highly doubt they are required to do so unless you specifically paid for
that service.

Did you use a credit card to pay for it? That may open up some options for
you.

You're right...to a point. Merchandise that doesn't work correctly on
delivery/out of the box is usuallly the responsibility of the seller.
Most STORES will accept defective returns and exchange for new merchandise.
But, once again, the hunt for the lowest price has bitten someone in the
ass. Chances are that Digitalgear isn't an authorized Sharp dealer to start
with. And even if they are, they are well within their legal rights to
insist that the manufacturer honor the warranty...not them.
Sorry Linus, but they ain't screwing you over...at least not legally.

Linus,

No disrespect intended, but did you try re-seating the power cables and check
if the electrical outlet is hot? Sometimes it's these little things that are
overlooked.

Why would buying it on eBay have helped, aside from letting you vent with
negative feedback?

I buy stuff on eBay all the time. The thing is to make sure you're
buying from reputable sellers. There are several liquidators of
electronics in Toronto that I implicitly trust after many deals with
them. They all have better than 98% positive feedback and thousands of
deals under their belt. And I always pay via PayPal and do the whole
auction over eBay, including Buy-it-now purchases. And the few times I
have dealt with individuals, I've stuck to that rule and always made out
OK. The one time I got burned, I answered a web ad for an individual who
also sold on eBay. I got burned from his website but I notice eBay shut
him down.
