Hi all,
I am going to give my present Samsung TV to my son and buy a new one
for myself.

What does anyone think of the "Toshiba" 40inch LCD HD TV
40BV70140
It is the only set in the price range of £350.00 that has 4 HDMI sockets
which I can use.
I am not bothered about it not being a "Smart" TV as my Humax Freeview
recorder can do all that.

Bear in mind that it's not got a Freeview HD tuner, just Freeview, which
might make it a bit of a short-sighted choice.

Hi Fred,
Does that mean it is a HD set but cannot watch freeview on the
set in HD?
Mick.

There could be a third make which is perfect.

I doubt it! But if there is, how do I identify it?

I don't know about perfect, but Sony and Panasonic are obvious
candidates if Samsung and Toshiba aren't good enough.

including the supermarket re-branded ones?

I doubt that's a route to perfection! ;-)

David.

Hi David,
Here is a link to it if it works?
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/toshiba...u-ray~10490819

The info given has the tuner as: DVB-T tuner DVB-T digital Freeview tuner.
Is this an HD one or not? I am confused!
Mick.

The model numbers end with a letter.
The nearest to the one Mick quoted is 40BV701B
http://www.home-entertainment.toshib...1/#/detailsTab

40" Full HD 1080p LCD TV
40BV701B

Latest prices from:
£319.99

This looks functionally very similar to the Celcus 40" Full HD TV that I
bought for £250 a few weeks ago - the only obvious difference (apart
from cosmetic) being that my set has just 2 HDMI inputs instead of four.
Many of the menus are identical and sections of the manual are the same.

This being the case, I expect that the Tosh is made in Turkey like the
Celcus, probably by Vestel. I can't say that the components are
necessarily the same, but the Celcus picture is terrific - I can't fault
it all.

The downside would be the lack of a DVB-T2 tuner, but given the quality
of upscaled SD - with decent broadcast material - it looks almost as
good as HD anyway.

The screen is HD and will display HD material from external boxes via
the HDMI ports. But the internal tuner will handle only SD Freeview
channels.

No, it's not HD then. To get HD, you need DVB-T2 (terrestrial) or
DVB-S2 (satellite) tuners.

Yes it's VERY confusing, as regularly compained of here in the past.

This page on my site may help explain some important things about
buyin a new TV:

Not without an external Freeview HD box.

Essentially, the statement that this is a Full HD TV is simply a lie.
It's an SD TV with the capability of being an HD video monitor. However,
provided you know that's what you're getting, it may not be a bad thing.
It enables you to connect a cheap HD set-top box (either terrestrial or
satellite) to it.

Hi Fred,

That's right, Freeview HD is broadcast on a specific mux that uses a
different transmission scheme to standard def and so only a receiver
with the magic words "Freeview HD" will receive them. While much of the
content is duplicated in SD, BBC HD is a notable exception and I can see
cases in the future when some content is only available in HD.

The only way you will get Freeview HD content with that set is with a
separate Freeview HD set top box (or recorder) which seems a bit daft to
me so in your place I would avoid that one and pay a bit more of one
with Freeview HD.

While there are those who say this is all pretty obvious in the specs I
think it is a point that will be tripping up quite a few unsuspecting
buyers.

One thing that struck me when comparing the screen shots in the Toshiba
and Celcus manuals was that the (identical) channel lists show some DTT
channels tagged as "HD". The TV will decode MPEG-4 HD when broadcast
using DVB-T as opposed to DVB-T2.

That's not much use in the UK but might explain the Full HD label. It
also explains why the Celcus media player will play MP4 videos.
