Default the hidden cost of DSO

Seems like it, because the dumpits would charge a fortune to take them
as trade waste. One hotel I know has piled up some of the 14" sets
they've decided to get rid of (you can't really have set top boxes in
hotel rooms, you know what travelling salesmen are like; they'd pinch
the scart leads) and they plan to put them in the big bins one at a time
for the next few months.

They should ask staff members to volunteer to take them to the dumpit
one at a time.

I think you will find TV is more a way of life in Northern areas
where once it goes dark after 17:00h, it is not safe to venture outdoors,
compared to the more prevalent take it or leave it approach of
Greater Londoners who have a much wider choice of entertainment
facilities -- ballet, discotheques, jazz clubs, opera, theater
-- on their doorstep (or a mere London Underground ride away).

I live much further North than Bill and have all of the essential services
within 400 yards - a pub, a fish and chip shop and a betting shop.

And just how many had TVs that couldn't be used with a FreeView box so

People don't like having boxes attached to wall mounted tellys, or in
the kitchen.

How many wall mounted CRT sets have you come across?

Some people might have been misinformed or tricked into getting rid of
old TVs.

Oh indeed. And perhaps this applies more in the 'Eee tha's a reight
barmpot!' part of the country. Where TV is still a novelty?

Don't be silly.

You started it.

Analogue switch off had no impact or cost here - we chose to go
completely digital years ago - like many.

Did you really never get the urge during all that time to
sneak a nostalgic peak at the Teletext pages?

There's not many Teletext pages left now, only a few, DSO info pages, and
'We've been Sacked' notices. However the BBC's teletext (note the small t)
called Ceefax still continues to serve the areas of the UKofGB&NI with
analogue TV coverage using content 'cut and pasted' from the 'Red Button'
digital service.

I would make a guess and say that the average cost per household is
about £200.

Spending this money will stimulate the economy and create jobs
for workers in the People's Republic of China to produce the
set top boxes needed for transition to digital.

If you look at the dumpit sites they all have mountains of TV sets,
the vast majority of which are in working condition Bill

Most of those (if the have a scart socket) are being put sold/diverted
by council dump staff to end up into containers bound for Africa.
To be sold on their used equipment market, as Africa didn't have a
market of new equipment to filter down
