Default DSO odds and ends

We were about to embark at Dover, when lid (Mark
Carver) came up to me and whispered:

Actually Hannington has always been classed as Group E, ever since
it opened,

True, as CH66 was allocated for IBA2 from 1960mumble, it was indeed Group
E officially, but for practical purposes it was Group B from 1970 to
1982.

I even have a 1969 cutting from the Basingstoke Gazette
that states that in form of a letter from the BBC, that was written
in response to an article a week earlier, quoting a local dealer
that had said 'turning round existing (Group A) London aerials will
be fine'.

I don't suppose you can either scan and mail that to my Reply-To or can
fax it to me - fax number available by email on request.

Alternatively, I could meet you at the Library to photocopy it?

Come 1982, and Channel 4 on UHF Ch 66, there were loads of Group B
(and probably ex London Grp As !) in use. In fact, the IBA
deliberately placed Hannington on 7 months worth of trade tests on
C4, to highlight the problem ahead of the channel's launch.

I was living on the Old Dean at Camberley at the time, and because of our
elevation and the direction of the Group A CP aerial, we used to get
crystal clear Southern, and BBC1 South as well. Channel 4 from Hannington,
not an option on the main TV, but our portables in bedrooms could always
get Hannington better than CP.

I'll dig it out over the weekend, and stick it on my webspace for all to
see.

Through the miracle of remote ftp access to my Network drive:-

Ta-da !

You can thank Gerry Robinson, Charles Allen, and Michael Green for that.

And do not forget that Michael Green used to be the boss of coalition
government of national salvation Prime Minister Cameron, whom Cameron
has rigorously defended.

An aerial rigger friend, who has been in the trade for over 30 years,
reckons that since DSO from Mendip his business has had the kiss of death on
it, the only aerial work he seems to get now is for problems with the
remaining low power muxs, but even they'll be no more in a few months' time.

There's an aerial which has been in a sorry state on neighbouring property
for the best part of 12 months, I suggested to him was possible job and to
give them a knock when he was passing, apparently the telly works OK
(possibly receiving reception from a line of sight vertically polarised
relay) so why spend any money until it falls off completely :-)

In the West London, it was not that unusual for homes with Crystal
Palace Group A aerials also have a second aerial for Hannington, so they
could get an alternative ITV region (Southern, on Ch42) and (as a bonus)
BBC South (Ch 39). Almost certainly, these would be Group B (as there
was no need for Channel 4, on Ch66).

Not just West London. I had one here in the Sauf.
