Default Freeview recorder to replace my worn out Toppy?

Hi all,

My Toppy (TF5810PVRT) Freeview recorder I bought in 2007 has given
up!

Would anyone think a "Humax HDR-FOX T2 HD Twin Tuner with a 1TB Hard drive"
a good replacement?

The reviews seem good, it is not cheap £319.99 but as long as it's a good
buy, I like the 1TB hard drive.

I would value anyone's thoughts that have one or other suggestions please?

Mick.

Humax direct will do you a 500MB version for 219UKP unless you really need
that much storage.

As ex-TiVo users we were very reluctant to change but with the advent of HD
freeview the temptation became too strong. We went with that model and
whilst it's not as user friendly as the old TiVo, it's not bad.

Considering that it's a recorder and playback machine though, the remote
control could definitely be better. The playback control buttons are too
small and badly positioned.

I haven't used the internet portal much. iPlayer seemed clunkier to use
than on my daughter's PS3 but I think that was improved after the latest
software update. iplayer playback seems fine.

So, it's not a TiVo but I think I'd still give it four to four and a half
stars out of five. It works well and the interface is easy to use after a
bit of familiarisation.

I think you'll be happy with it.

Should say that price is for a "graded" manager's special machine. I bought
my 9200T in the same way - it looked as good as new to me and have given me
no problems at all.

If the OP doesn't need the HD Freeview channels they do a new Humax
PVR9300T500 for £195:

Mine trundles along quite nicely nowadays, hardly ever giving a
problem. There were a few issues when I first got it, but software
updates saw to those. I'd recommend one.

I wouldn't waste any time on the unspectacular portal thingy, but it
does at least work. The disappointment is that iPlayer only streams,
it doesn't download files to your hard disk to watch later, which is
what I actually want.

Just bought one for my mum and wouldn't recommend it. The software is
ancient (virtually identical to the 9200 in most ways) and the lack of
ongoing development means it shows its age - it looks very primitive.

The hardware is very limited, too, so simple things like loading the
stored EPG off the disk when starting up can take several seconds -
maybe up to a minute for it to fully populate (remember that originally
it wouldn't store the EPG at all).

Having said that, if you don't mind a primitive UI the basic
functionality is fine. It's certainly a mature and well-sorted
product.

Unless you want to go HD, the Toppy can likely be fixed. The common fault
is the PS - and a few new caps for pennies sorts it.

I think you can get exchange boards on Ebay if it's not something you can
do yourself. A Google will find details of the repair.

I think he may want to record more than one 15 min HD program. :¬)
