Sony issued the following statement on 19 May, saying that they will
issue a fix in "7-10 days".

Indeed, but I did Sony a slight disservice. They didn't state that they
would issue a fix, but rather they stated that they were testing a fix
and would have more information in the next 7 to 10 days.

Point noted. I wonder what they mean by:

This fix will improve the transition from 1080i to 1080p and back, to
ensure the audio, picture and data information are not interrupted.

'Improve the transition' stops short of promising a full solution.
However, they do go on to use the word 'ensure'. We'll know by
tomorrow though :-)

Sony's announcement (URL above) was updated this afternoon, 1 June 2011,
with the words:-

*UPDATE* Firmware update due soon.


Update this afternoon, 6 June 2011, with the following:-

"This issue has been resolved. The software is currently undergoing
final quality assurance testing. We are targeting the end of June to
make a software release. Sets that are connected to the internet will
update automatically. Sets not connected to the internet can be updated
by USB.



We will update this forum when the software has been made available."

Check-out the Freeview forum on AV Forums. Plenty of discussion about
the issue there.

Seems there is a bodge to get around the problem until Sony manage to
release the corrective firmware.

just discovered that "bodge" is a Shakespearean word - not modern at all.

AFAICR a bodger is a kind of carpenter who knocks stuff up on the fly.

As mentioned before, my setup has a software de-interlacer that presents
1080p50 to my TV regardless of the source (either DVB-T1 or DVB-S1/S2).

When watching a programme on C4HD, as the end credits start to roll they
are ultra smooth, until the continuity announcer fades him/herself up
and overlays the "coming next" banner, at which point the motion becomes
jerky, until the end of the credits.

Is this something such as the vision mixer which comes in-circuit to add
the overlay reducing the stream from 1080i50 to 1080p25, which then gets
converted back to 1080i50 further along the chain for broadcast?

That happens on SD too and has annoyed me for a long time! The jerky
motion looks to me as if the overlay can't handle interlacing, and they
just throw away every other field. What was nice 50Hz motion is juddery
25Hz motion.

Yes, I have since noticed it on SD too, and seen other people allude to
it on other threads ... still annoying.
