Wouldn't it make more sense if channels we
51 BBC1 HD - not 50 52 BBC HD - not 54 53 ITV HD - not 51 54 C4 HD - not 52 Those are the numbers I "naturally" want to press. |

Wouldn't it make more sense if channels we Many modern TVs actually allow you to reassign the LCN and reorder the stations on the EPG according to your preference. Of the Freeview HD TVs I have seen in a certain branch of John Lewis, this was indeed possible on both Samsung and SONY models. |

And when new channels are added or old channels are removed from the EPG what happens? -- Brian Gregory. (In the UK) To email me remove the letter vee. |

I assume, to make them more logical. The question posed by OP was whether it would make sense for the broadcasters to reassign the numbers to make them more logical. |

On my Samsung FV I've numbered BBC 1 - 4, ITV 1 - 4, Ch. 4 and 5 as 1 - 10. Haven't bothered much with the others. -- Peter. The gods will stay away whilst religions hold sway |

Why would you want to reassign the numbers? Because one may want to move stations down from the 800s to a vacant channel eg assuming one is in England and can receive an adjacent Cymraeg transmitter BBC-1 Wales to 61, BBC-2 Wales to 62, ITV-1 Wales to 63, S4C to 8 etc, ITV-1 HD Wales (actually the ITV-1 London feed) to 55. Similarly for people near the English Scottish national frontier. The question posed by OP was whether it would make sense for the broadcasters to reassign the numbers to make them more logical. But it is not up to the broadcaster. It is decided by the Central Committee for EPG Coordination. |

I really think that the question the OP was asking was why whoever is responsible did not follow a more logical sequence in setting the channel numbers. He was asking why not BBC1 = 51, BBC HD = 52, ITV(STV) = 53, Channel 4 = 54. I often wondered the same myself. No-one has so far addressed the direct question. |

And I think the answer to that question has already been given. When the National Central Standing Committee for the Allocation of LCNs convened, it was tasked with assigning LCNs for BBC HD, ITV-1 HD / stv HD / utv HD, C4, and S4C, and the anticipated late arrival of five, which it did according to the simple numerical progression 50, 51, 52, 53, showing favoritism to the BBC by ordering it in position number 1, and placing ITV-1 HD on a "1" position. But then five dropped out of the Freeview HD proposals and thus was replaced with BBC-1 HD. This conundrum was resolved by the NCSCFTAOL placing BBC-1 HD on 50 and shunting BBC HD to 54. No-one has so far addressed the direct question. I trust that the above explanation will suffice as an answer to the direct question. |

The original question was: Wouldn't it make more sense if channels we 51 BBC1 HD - not 50 52 BBC HD - not 54 53 ITV HD - not 51 54 C4 HD - not 52 I don't think anyone is disputing that the numbers were validly assigned by the competent authority. The question is about sense not legality. To repeat again, the suggestion is that BBC One could be 51 Channel 3 (ITV-1/STV/UTV/Channel) could be 53 Channel 4 could be 54. The second digit would then have a logical and memorable connection to the channel. |
