But what is best for you may not be best for somebody else.

Consider the case of people who want to watch BBC-1 Northern Ireland,
BBC-1 Scotland, and BBC-1 Wales programs.

Why should the box not allow them to watch these programs on
LCN 101 and force them to watch the London program instead?

Remind me, what is the purpose of the Freeview EPG or mini channels list
available on all good digital receivers, or even the ability to set up
a favorites list with a few clicks of the button?

There should be no need to faf about. If you select, say, 101 for BBC1,
you should expect that the best feed will be automatically selected. If
a Freesat box can't do this simple task, then there is no advantage over
a non-Freesat HD box.

Is it so much more difficult to select 108 instead of 101? Whichever
channel you watch it's the same number of button presses.

Not sure quite how your chain of thought took you there.
Not quite as emotionally disturbing, but most people, I guess, expected
this.

No need for three digits. a single '1' should be all that is needed to
select BBC1.

It's a complete pain in the arse that we have to remember all of this
stuff. Why can't BBC1 HD be on 101, ITV1 HD on 103 etc. Complete bloody
shambles. Surely it's not beyond the technology to switch in and out of
the HD feed as appropriate.

I've just added it to Foxsat HDR "Favourites1", and moved it to where I
want it.

BBCHD - BBC1HD - BBC2 - ITV1HD - CH4HD - CH5 etc., exited (and saved).

I then pressed "OK", and once I've chosen "Favourites1", and changed
channel, I can press the "OK" button, see my "Favourites1" list and
select a channel.

Changing channel is two button presses.

If that is possible then Freesat should use for HD programs,

1 for BBC1 or 001
3 for ITV1 003
4 for CH4 004
6 For BBC HD 006 (or similar)

This would have no effect on SD viewers with their SD box.

I think the sort of thing Silk is envisaging is the STB automatically
putting the HD channel in place of the normal SD channel (if it is an HD
box, of course). The box should then be able, in response to transmitted
cues, to automatically switch to and from the SD stream for regional
material.
While this might seem technically feasible the results could be clunky
because of the non-synchronisation of the SD and HD streams and
differences in coding delays in the box. Also because of the
corresponding SD and HD streams potentially being on different
transponders the box could need more than 2 tuners.

Yes. I spoke to ITV's then director of technology at an industry bash a
couple of years ago, and ITV did indeed consider the idea, but tests
revealed there was too much 'thrashing around' at the transition points,
so it was rejected.

a good compromise is that when you are watching the SD channel, onscreen
comes ' press red for hd ' - and doing so causes a switch to the HD channel.
i'm pretty sure this has happened on the bbc at some point - but not often.

No, it was ITV HD on Freesat before they had an EPG position
