Default Sandy Heath - DSO2 (& HD)

Did a retune this morning.
TV is Sony 32EX503.
No probs, but still have BBC4, Beebies and BBC radio stations in the
800s (additionally).

Looked at "high quality" studio video from BBC1 and ITV1 morning shows
in HD on 50 and 51.
They are very good, but at normal viewing distances, it's tough to
tell the difference from the SD.
[I feel that means the Sony is doing a wonderful job of upscaling SD;
with its 100Hz, 1080p, etc).
This is a very very good TV (especially motion), except for:
1. "Good" viewing angle could be wider.
2. Channel change could be a bit faster..
3. Audio bass could be a bit better - but better than most thin TVs

I think it needs a really big TV to benefit from HD at normal viewing
distances.
I did read ITV were thinking of offering ITV2,3,4 etc in HD as a pay
service. As the source will be mostly upscaled SD, I doubt how much
better it would do than my TV.
I also subscribe to SkySports on VM, but will not be adding HD.

Also retuned a Pioneer box.
Ch 50, 51, etc not present (as expected)
Also no channels in the 800s. Good.

I'm pretty sure that both Breakfast and Daybreak are SD filmed shows? The
BBC HD channel would have been showing 1080i clips at that time of day
though.

Of course HD channels generally look better even when showing SDS content
due to the larger available bit rate.

BBC Breakfast (and in fact all BBC News facilities) are still SD.

When BBC Breakfast moves to Salford (or is it Manchester :-) ) next
year, it will be HD.

ITV Daybreak, does come from an HD equipped studio IIRC.

Retuned here (Sony VTX-D800U) with 20 dB of attenuation in-line. Only
two LCNs in the 800s: 'channel zero' (whatever that is) on 800 and
'create and craft' on 801, as well as 306 and 36 respectively. Both
those are in the Arqiva-B mux (now on ch67), but nothing else from that
mux came up in the 800s. Explanation...?

In fact I'm slightly puzzled to find Arq-B now on ch67, wasn't it on ch
46 (as Mux D) before DSO, with Mux-B/BBC-B/HD on ch 67, or did those two
swap round previously? Ofcom data simply says "the three commercial
muxes at Sandy Heath will remain on their pre-switchover channels and
powers for a period after DSO..."

The plan changed I think a few weeks ago.

The remarkable Mr 'a516' in Digital Spy explains all:-

Yes theres more switching around in August IIRC and a bit after that. I
suppose they've kept quiet about it so as not to confuse people too
much...

Oh, yes, I'm well aware of that. It was just Arq-B coming up on ch67
instead of 46 that surprised me.

For the public perhaps, but not for the trade, where filtered systems
are involved.

So far as I can make out now, the following summarises the current
situation and the forthcoming Sandy Heath COM-plex Shuffle:

SDN Arq-A Arq-B
Date Ch FFT Ch FFT Ch FFT
------ --- --- --- --- --- ---
13 Apr 43+ 2K 40+ 2K 67 8K
31 Aug 31 2K .. .. .. ..
14 Sep .. .. 67 2K 48 8K
23 Nov .. .. 52 8K -------
2012 51 8K -------
-------

Key: .. = no change
---- = final
+ = +ve offset

Anyone disagree?

Looks good. On ukfree.tv they are showing a date of 18 April 2012 for
the final SDN change, but no idea of the source.
They are posts from people in marginal areas that have lost Arq-B now it
is on 67 at 8K.

That's often the problem with ukfree.tv, a lot of the 'information' is
speculation.

They are posts from people in marginal areas that have lost Arq-B now it

Which is a major problem for some, because the pay version of Sky Sports
2 is on that mux (in post DSO areas)

Are you able to add power levels into your table? I struggled to pick up
Ch67 on my loft aerial before DSO but didn't do anything about it
because I assumed that the power increase would take care of the
problem. Now it seems that ch67 will be with us until November. Does it
get a power increase before then?
