Do you have any means of recording digital TV?
Treat yourself to a harddrive PVR and retain the TV.

Got a Freeview DVD recorder. But now I can't record one thing and watch
another. So it's a new TV and/or PVR. Oh well.

The PVRs I've got (Topfield/Humax), and most others, let you record up
to 2 channels at the same time.
So you can record one while watching another.

Does not work with the 8K transmission mode that is used post-DSO
http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/2kequipment

If you've got nothing to lose, try this

Put remote into service mode

Press TV/Video/DVD button until TV LED is on
Press and hold yellow until TV LED flashes
Enter 99999, all three LEDs should be on

Put TV into testmode2
Turn on TV
Press video twice, TT _ _ will appear
Enter 81 to turn on BER display mode
Entering 83 will toggle between 2k, 8k, 2k + 8k transmission modes

Then try a re-tune with it in either 8K or 2K+8K mode ...

Thanks. It was already in 2K+8K mode. I tried switching it to 8K only, and
the auto tune still stuck at 16%.

Oh well, I guess that conclusively proves the old Sony models aren't 8K
capable, these was a scintilla of hope for my DX100 ... but no longer.

Try plugging the aerial in when the scan reaches 17%. It will probably stick
on the next MPX it encounters but you never know.

My only casualty was an ex OnDigital Nokia Mediamaster 9850 T so I can't complain.

Hold your horses. After a lot of Googling for other people that've had this
jammed tuning problem on DX40s and other Sony models of that era, it seems
to be the 3.50[GB] firmware that's at fault. And it's due to a "split-nit"?
Apparently it needs 4.10[GB] firmware to let the tuning work. This split-
nit thing seems to have happened in 2009, but I've not retuned the telly in
a couple of years. Presumably, I never will now.

I do have the 4.10[GB] firmware that fixes split-nit, and also adds
three digit channel numbers.

I'm still reading through the archived posts. I don't know why I'm stuck on
3.50[GB]. I guess it's stuck there for good now if I can't get the
broadcast.

And if you could the quested then is whether there are any more update slots
scheduled for your model.

My Vestel PVRs were able to be revived using a serial cable see the
Techwood PVR160T(T810UK). thread

I don't suppose that TV has an RS232 on the back?
