Does the size of the border change during a movie?

I was watching "Tron" on my HDTV. I haven't actually measured the
top/bottom border, but I would swear it changed in more than one part
in the movie. The picture filled the screen left/right, but the
top/bottom seemed to change.

What was the source of the video? Some films are cropped top to bottom
after production.

The only one I can think of was "The Dark Knight" which was mostly the
2.35:1 frame of the original 35mm film. However there were a few scenes
that were shot on large Imax format at I think 1.66:1. These were presented
at full screen on the BluRay while the rest of the film had the black bars
top and bottom. Maybe there were more Imax type films done. I don't know
about Tron.

Transformers 2 also used IMAX and a shifting AR. Tron doesn't use IMAX and
the director is just trying you to fool you into thinking it does.

Often, premium movie channels (such as HBO and Cinemax) will show the
opening titles of 2.35:1 movies in their correct aspect ratio with black
bars at the top and bottom. After the credits finish rolling, they expand
the picture to fill the screen, truncating the left and right edges of the
picture.

They might stop this practice if enough people complain.

Most movies from the past decade are in Super35 so going 1.78 from 2.35 is
done by open matte (you see more) instead of cropping.
Movies are usually only framed for the OAR.

can happen.
They usually protect for 1.78 nowadays but the extra dead space can take
away from what your suppose to focus on in a shot.
Red Cliff is a good example of how seeing more take away from the
