That wasn't my point - I'm saying it will be rather difficult to trick her into thinking it's a black and white TV! She may not twig that there's no such thing as a flat-panel black and white TV, but surely the sight of colour on the screen will give it away? As you may have noticed from an earlier posting, my *real* response to this situation - which I promise I would use with my own mother - is "Tough ****, deal with it." Of course, I wouldn't use that language, but it absolutely does reflect the sentiment I'd express. Why should old people get special consideration in matters like this just because they're old? This is the height of indulgence. SteveT |

Buy her a cheap Freeview TV, turn the colour right down until the picture is monochrome. Job done. SteveT At age 73 she still needs to pay for a licence. Following your suggestion she would surely need to get a colour licence because a Freeview TV is capable of displaying colour. When I worked for a TV rental Company we had a few old people that insisted they did not want colour so we supplied them with Colour TVs with the colour decoder modded. (Large screen BW had been withdrawn .) ( I believe we removed the crystal). We then put a sticker on the back listing what and why we had done it. This was deemed OK for the purpose of the BW licence. as the TV could not receive and show a colour picture. We could have just set the colour control to zero by wiring it, but that was a more difficult thing to do on the sets we used. I don't remember ever doing that, but what we did do on a regular basis was remove the tuner so the set became just a monitor. Particularly remember doing this for Moss Bros / Miss Selfridge / Dotty Perkins etc. etc. retail group for in-store video promotions. -- Graham. %Profound_observation% |

Just say, if questioned, "Yes well even black and white TV sets have a coloured menu screen. You see they invented menu screens after they stopped making black and white TV sets." Bull**** baffles brains. Mind you if it were me I'd leave the set with just a little bit of colour on it, and if there were protests say "It's your imagination." Then turn it up a bit each week. Stephen wrote: Hi all, My mother has a black and white TV. obviously it only has a analogue Tuner, no scart or even CVBS inputs. She is a colour refusenik and will not switch to a colour TV period. DSO is happening in March in her area. I have been looking into some freeview boxes with integrated modulators. This then leads to two or possibly three questions questions: (a) whats going to happen to the B&W TV licence after DSO completes in the UK? (b) assuming I found a freeview box with a modulator onboard, if I was to connect one of these to her B&W TV set, would she still be legal with a B&W TV licence or would she be obliged to buy a colour licence as technically speaking the freeview box is capable of recieving colour TV even though the B&W set clearly isnt and she would continue to watch in black and white? (c) if the freeview box means that she needs a colour licence, can I do something to the freeview box to render it incapable of recieving colour, and only outputts B&W, if this would then allow her to continue having a B&W TV licence legally?? Surprisingly enough, when the B&W TV set breaks, some kind soul always seems to find one in their loft and gives it to my mother...... The remote control will be an interesting change for her given she is so used to twiddling the tuner dial...... Can I suggest euthanasia? No need to go that far! Just poke her eyes out, and tell her the replacement TV is B&W I know it's nasty, but it's only a little lie.
