The Now Show is back, and it has the same little problem as it did last
year. Just after it starts, just after the music stops, the picture pixellates badly for a few seconds. It always does it (well, every time I've been watching it anyway). It's always at the same moment in the programme. It seems very odd. There must be a specific reason for it, with it being regular as clockwork. I've seen the fault just now on DSAT, but I'm fairly sure I've seen it on DTT as well. Bill |

The Now Show is on Radio 4, so if you are seeing pixellation while listening to it a trip to an optician might be in order. :-) -- Peter Duncanson (in uk.tech.digital-tv) |

I had to get up at the crack of dawn for the plumber to come and look at the boiler and suck his teeth. Of course I mean the One Show. Thanks for pointing it out. Bill |

I'll record it tomorrow and have a look at it. My first thought is that the MPEG compression is struggling with a large number of changes in the picture between the rapidly changing title sequence and then the the studio shot and is taking a little while to settle down, although "a few seconds" sounds a bit long for a BBC channel. -- Peter Duncanson (in uk.tech.digital-tv) |

I've seen odd effects on BBC SD DTT broadcasts, sudden severe pixellation on still images, the last thing you'd expect ! though I don't recall seeing any recently. Mind you, default BBC 1 viewing for me now is the HD version. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. http://www.paras.org.uk/ |

Bill I've noticed that too, on D-SAT, I'd assumed it was local interference but if you're affected as well it can't be. -- Adrian |

Bill On BBC1 DSAT (but not BBC1 HD DSAT) I get a glitch at that point in The One Show which I'm guessing is the final stage of handshake / switchover to Network after regional news opt-outs? -- Alan |

No, not in this case, it's difficult to describe but the effect is quite different to the pixellation you get with a reception glitch. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. http://www.paras.org.uk/ |

At a guess, the stat mux is choking the bandwidth too hard, or the encoder is simply buggy - briefly allocating far too few bits to an "easy to encode" still picture. Cheers, David. |
