Default iPlayer switches to secure RMTPE streaming of radio

It seems hopes that iPlayer radio might become available on open
source devices might be dashed as the BBC _increases_ the level of
protection on its iPlayer radio streams...

http://forum.applian.com//showthread...ing-6-Jan-2011

....so that's the end of downloading a week's worth of BBC radio into
my mp3 player in a few minutes.

Back to the 20th century in 2011 it seems

Cheers,
David.

ah well that explains why so many get_iplayer users (including me) were
suddenly starting at ERROR: RTMP_ReadPacket followed by 'Failed to download
blah blah..' But there is a solution. By using flvstreamer in the command
line one can overcome this glitch and continue downloading as usual. Here's
how to use flvstreamer:

Thanks tg - found that earlier - though get_iplayer is still working
here anyway by dropping back to the mp3 stream. ipdl.exe (the other
option I went back to) died in December apparently.

I've never managed to force get_iPlayer to grab the AAC stream,
despite following instructions at the time. I'll try with flvstreamer
when I get chance.

Cheers,
David.

Without comment on the rights or wrong...

Rights management and the ability to secure those rights I
suspect, not needed on all iPlayer feeds but probably easier to
implement across the board than on an individual feed/content
level.

Presumably to even out the load on the servers or more likely the
pipe to the internet. If some one is slurping down at 8Mbps rather
than the 1Mbps of a normal streaming connection that is possibly
stopping seven other normal users getting a reliable connection.

It's pretty staggering how they are making TV viewing via iPlayer
easier, yet radio listening harder and harder. For TV, you can now
download a WMV file straight to your PC for viewing via Media Player,
thus bypassing the iPlayer desktop (which is handy, as I can then view
it using Media Center Extender), yet for radio, it's live streaming
only, and they're making it harder and harder. And not everything I want
to hear is available as a podcast.

At this rate, I am going to have to start being organised, and record
what I want direct from air, rather than retrospectively seeing what
I've missed and downloading it.

Ha. It's not that easy with the TV either.

As an example, Michael Portillo's "Great British Railway Journeys" is
currently available on iPlayer. It's a 5-part series, and you can
download parts 1, 2 and 5 to watch offline; parts 3 & 4 are only
available for streaming.

As a result of things like this you never know whether the unmissable
programme will in fact be missed.

I wonder whether it's feasible to build a system that records every
program on every channel for a week. I've never got around to doing the
Maths before, but lets see.

With 6 multiplexes, each transmitting a total of 30 Mbits/sec (I think),
lets call that a total of around about 25 MBytes/Sec. = 1.5 Gb /min. =
90Gb/hour. = A bit more than 2Tb/Day.

Humm.... so I reckon we would be talking somewhere around about 15Tb per
week. Perhaps a RAID system based upon 2Tb drives could store that much.
8 * 2Tb (plus the appropriate number of parity drives), would create
16Tb of storage.

So I reckon just about possible, but a bit expensive at the moment.

It's not just possible: I believe it is already being done by one of
the main broadcasters.

I was thinking more of a system in the home, so that if you missed
anything you would have a chance of finding it on your hard drive.
