Frees?! Condemns! "Truth is stranger than fiction by definition -

own limits". (I've forgotten where I read that, otherwise I'd credit
the author. Probably Mark Twain.)

Just this very evening I have been informed by his Mrs that she will
not be using a mobile phone ever again as she doesn't want to be
contributing to cancer and dead bees, even though she is not sure they
do contribute, she's happier to be 'better safe than sorry'. Jesus.

Must admit that I do wonder about the power used around the world to run

is being used to supply them with YooHooToob, etc... :-)

Yep, I had a chat with an enviroweirdo friend of mine not long ago. He
refuses to communicate with anyone far away in any other manner than
'social networking' sites. He also maintains 7 separate websites, all
duplicating each other, to advertise his work. I put it to him that
this profligate waste of energy is at odds with his hippy-dippy
ascetic lifestyle choices, only to be greeted with a look of oblivion.
I think that if there was a badly-maintained diesel engine chugging
along at the bottom of his garden which spewed out darker and darker
exhaust with an increased electrical load, he'd get the message, but
until electricity stops being magic to him, it'll have no effect. Sad
really.

Mark Twain said something even more apposite:

It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you
know for sure that just ain't so.

How can you remain married to such a person? To have such stupidity
constantly at close quarters must be very wearing.

Lecytrickery is magic, it's made by fairies and pixies sprinkling
stardust on wires

It's lies put about by Anglo Scientrific types like you that are creating a
Lectrickery shortage by Dissing the pixies, making them go away.

The Frenches don't have our problems with a pixie shortage, cos they
build big comfortable homes for them called Newclular Powwor Stayshions

I know I've read the Wikipedia entry on your friends servers

It does worry me that so many people are totally clueless about how the
'gadgets' around them work or about basics of science, etc. Not because I
expect everyone to be able to handle fancy maths, or really understand the
difficult bits. But because it can lead them into the kind of mindset you
describe. Phones, computers, etc, are all taken for granted as 'magic' and
may be chosen on a sort of 'designer label' basis. Then blame 'scientists'
for the downsides which should have been wished away.

doesn't this go further? - wanting to blame someone for the 'freak weather'
we've had recently. The disruption must be someone's fault since man is in
total control of his environment.

People aren't really clueless. They just shut out certain parts of the
buying decision. I for example grossly simplify cost (social,
environmental, political and economic) when I buy some of the pointless
tat I seem to covet. It's the way rationality 'settles' that matters.
Why it settles in a particular place is interesting, I think.

Well, that might be a bit extreme! Always made me smile at the thought
of 'saving the planet'. We were/are doing nothing of the sort - saving
our own skins if anything!

His, not mine. Fortunately, they live 250 miles away and are generally
against polluting, wasteful machines like cars. Except for their own
car, and when the journeys are really necessary, you know, like the
journey to the airport for jaunts for poor African countries.

Indeed, and their petulant strops are more often than not based on
emotion rather than fact - the concept of personal responsibility was
laid to rest many years ago. But hey! who needs responsibility when
you've got a pocket full of someone else's and CHOICE!
