USB/LAN connection for Blu-Ray player

Do I need a specific USB/LAN adapter for a Sony Blu-Ray player?

I received a Sony Blu-Ray player for Xmas. It has a USB port so that
I can stream movies from Netflix. The box says, "UWA-BR100 adapter
not included". Now these things sell for $80 at BestBuy. Even used
ones are selling for $60+ on ebaY. Question: Do I need that specific
USB/LAN adapter or would any one do? The generic ones are selling for
under $20.

"Streaming movies from Netflix" has nothing to do with USB nor Blu-Ray.

The UWA-BR100 adapter is an 802.11n wireless LAN adapter, so it
may well enable streaming from Netflix, but only if you have a
computer hooked to your TV or the TV is one of those "internet
enabled" models.

I'm pretty sure it only supports the UWA-BR100.

If your BR player has an ethernet port, you can either use it wired to
your network, or get a 'bridge adapter' that will go from ethernet to
wireless.

then the netflix streaming will be available.

Frankly, if you can, you should take it back and get one with wireless
built in already. As cheap as they are this year, it should be cheaper
than adding that adapter.

The UWA-BR100 adapter does not depend on a computer or TV wireless
connection but it does need a WIFI acces point or router to connect to
that has a coonection to the Internet. The output generated by a
streaming video from Netflix generated from your Blu-ray player goes
to the TV with the standard audio/video connection used for playing
Blu-ray discs.

A generic USB/LAN adapter is desgned to give a computer a WIFI
connection to the Internet. Unless the Blu-ray player has
instructions on how to set up this type of adapter I would assume you
would need the Sony specified one but I don't know for sure.

You can save yourself some aggravation and money by simply running an
Ethernet cable from your router to the back of the player.

or, if it MUST be wireless ... connect any of a number of generic wireless
ethernet bridges, designed for player,s TV's, printers, game consoles, etc
.... to your player's ethernet port.

Aha! I sit corrected ( after a little Googling ). That's kind of odd -
I would not have expected that. Some Sony Blu-Ray players apparently
come with 802.11 built-in (probably n, I'd guess - it doesn't really
say...), and support streaming in that way.

Slightly odd, but I suppose there are people who don't want an A/V
computer or game console to do that for 'em.
