In The Netherlands, which turned off analogue transmissions more than a
year
ago, Sony only markets PVRs with analogue tuners. The cable company we use
does
provide some programmes in analogue, but the picture quality is poor.

Perhaps that's a good thing.
Some early Sony IDTVs sold in the UK turned out to have nasty software bugs
and as far as I can see the only help Sony ever offered was "you need to buy
this more recent model".

Choose a PVR made by people who care a bit more about whether they get the
software right.

No, I had several customers and neighbours with problems with early Sony
IDTVs, and the ones who knew how to complain had a visit from Sony
itself. I don't know what they did, but they fixed the tellys. I was
well impressed at the time.

That may have been a firmware update for the increase
in channel capacity.

Some of these sets are declared in the "black list" of
receivers that won't work after DSO. In practice,
they do have 8k capability but it needs to be changed
in the service menu, which most users couldn't handle,
so Sony are saving themselves the bother of arranging
service visits and haggling over who pays.

In practice, these old CRTs are so slow and bulky,
most users are glad to get rid of them.

I had an early Sony IDTV and had two visits on behalf of Sony. One was
a firmware upgrade to enable digital teletext to work properly. The
other entailed a modification to one of the PCB's that 'made it more
digital' according to the engineer who did it. I don't remember what
prompted this visit, it might have been the start of On Digital and a
requirement to use the CAM slot. (I got a trial On Digital card a week
before the company collapsed.)

Forgot to say that I sold the set to a young lad for £20 on eBay after
I got a panel TV earlier in the year.

I did have a look at some of the modern ones -- the very thin ones --
but I thought they'd look out of place here.
