Default OT - digital camcorder SDHC card

Suppose there's a very tenuous link as the stuff filmed on the digital
camcorder will be shown on a digital TV :-)

Just got a Toshiba Camileo S20 Digital Camcorder for the mother-in-law. It
records onto SDHC card (up to 32GB) but I can't see anything in the manual
as to which flavour of SDHC card. I've only ever had experience of standard
SD cards so it came as a complete surprise to discover that there are
different classes of SDHC.

I can get a Verbatim 8GB SDHC Class 6 card for £14.87
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/230591

or a Kingston 8GB SDHC Class 10 card for £15.90
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/223888

or a SanDisk 8GB SDHC Class 2 card for £9.29
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SDHC...bxgy_ce_text_b

(or http://tinyurl.com/3ajv6by if you prefer).

The camcorder will record in Full HD 1080p but as they don't have a 1080p TV
(nor any interest in getting one) I'm thinking that she'll probably do most
recording in HD 720p which would suit their TV - a Panasonic TH-42PX80B HD
Ready (720P) plasma.

So, first question is, which of the three SDHC cards above would be best -
Class 2, 6 or 10? I'm guessing that the class has something to do with the
read/write speed of the card, with the higher number being faster?

Secondly, am I right in thinking that she should set the recording to 720p
rather than 1080p? What would it look like if she recorded in 1080p? Initial
viewing of recorded material is likely to be straight on the TV but she also
has a Philips DVDR725H DVD/HDD recorder (standard def) so she'll use that to
burn stuff onto DVD+R discs for more long-term storage.

TIA

Not a videorecorder. But when I bought my Tascam HDP2 audio recorder (that
works up to 192k/24 bit) it came with a list of types of card that have
been tested and could be expected to work. So maybe Toshiba have something
similar?

The Tascam also has a 'test card' function that will tell you if a card can
cope. Again, maybe your camcorder also does this?

Slainte,

Jim

The class number is supposed to be MB/s:

2MB/s would be marginal for HD, 6MB/s plenty.

My Sony Camcorder needs a Class 4 minimum according to the book of
words, so Richard's answer agrees perfectly with that.

Record in the best quality.
a) it can do it so you can use the better quality for editing etc.
b) she will get a better TV later and the fact that they could have been
better will really annoy.
