pretty sure that HDMI doesn't support auto switching - stupid but there
you go.

Yes, that's my understanding, too. It isn't part of the HDMI standard, so
they have to implement brand-specific bodges.

Maybe the way the

data unless you are actually switched to it,

But it apparently does - for certain Sony devices...

The following suggests that perhaps it does!:

if instead I switch on the Humax Foxsat PVR (on HDMI 1), it just

Sony UK have replied as follows:

"After looking into this matter further it appears that HD Humax
boxes do not have the feature 'HDMI Control', which allows automatic
input switching to HDMI devices connected to your BRAVIA TV."

Am awaiting a reply from Humax..

HDMI Control seems to be the standard defined to do the clever "out of
band" stuff. Manufacturers have tried to own it by calling it Bravia
Link, Viera Link etc, but things should interoperate. For instance, my
Bravia will automatically switch on the HDMI attached Panasonic 5.1
Home Theatre system and the Bravia TV remote adjusts the sound and can
pause etc DVDs. Also switching on the Panasonic by inserting a DVD
automatically switches on the Bravia and selects the correct input. So
the framework is there, and works across brands, but if the Humax
doesn't say "here I am" over the HDMI, the TV won't switch.
It could be they haven't implemented HDMI control because everytime
the PVR switches on to record something, it would auto switch from the
programme you are watching to whatever the PVR is tuned to, which is
what happens with my Toppy connected via Scart, and can be very
annoying.

That's exactly the nuisance the SO has with her Sky setup (not HD).
Extremely annoying!

With Sony Bravia/Humax HD setup, the fact that the TV remembers the
last connection will solve the problem, except for the odd occasion
when the last connecton was e.g. DVD.
