It could be an homage to the Liqourice allsorts episode of long, long ago. To me, and I am sure a lot of other people, it sounded more like a reference to Wilder's performance in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. |

An homage to but the TARDIS would have made it a crossover. There was no point in Wilder doing a Geilgud in Willy Wonka. It was a kids film and as far as I remember, depth and Soviet angst is not really what kids are into, Disney and High School Musical more like! Even then the quality of his acting would still be far in excess to what would be needed for Dr. Who which is tied into the history of "ooo no missus!" the great British farce, i.e., Terry and June, Bone Kickers, Get Some In, My Family and Dr. Who to name but a few. |

Indeed, so. This does of course raise the old question, in view of the success of Tom Baker's slightly manic but comic portrayal of Doctor Who, which is "Would Gene Wilder have been a good choice of actor to play the role of Doctor Who?" The closest to him was Sylvester McCoy and he was terrible as Dr Who IMHO. -- (\__/) M. (='.'=) Due to the amount of spam posted via googlegroups and (")_(") their inaction to the problem. I didn't say he was worse than Colin Baker just he was the actor (who actually played Dr Who) most like Gene Wilder IMHO. I don't remember watching Dr Who much during the Colin Baker years. I am struggling to remember Davison in the role apart from he wasn't as good as Tom Baker. I'm not sure whether it was the actor or the scripts that made Dr Who under McCoy poor -- probably a bit of both. Maybe he brought too much of his comedy background with him to Dr Who. -- (\__/) M. He (McCoy) was certainly good fun in the studio. As in everything else he worked on. Maybe not to the director, though. -- *I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message. I didn't say he was worse than Colin Baker Sorry I did not mean to imply that you had. I should have been more explicit in asking if you thought that because he was terrible, you also considered him to be worse than Peter Davidson or Colin Baker. The period of Colin Baker as the Doctor was seriously marred by the "Trial of a Time Lord" collection of episodes of dismal scripts and stories. I'm not sure whether it was the actor or the scripts that made Dr Who under McCoy poor -- probably a bit of both. I have not watched much of McCoy's material, but the overall impression was that the story lines had become very poor -- the nonsense of the Paradise Towers, Delta and the Bannerman, the Happiness Patrol, the production was running out of steam, and he was burdened with poor companions who were there merely to try and make the show hip and contemporary in order to "identify" with younger viewers. Maybe he brought too much of his comedy background with him to Dr Who. Again, my impression was that he was much more convincing in the role than Jon Pertwee who also came from a comedy background. |
