Default ITV HD puzzle

I am thinking of getting HD freesat but am puzzled by the statement that
ITV HD is not available in the STV region.

I never knew the satellite did not transmit ITV HD to Scotland. It must be
very sophisticated to do that.

The receiver requires you to enter a postcode so it selects the
"correct" copy of the transmission for your area. There is no regional
ITV HD for Scotland but if you enter a London postcode you will get ITV
HD on channel 1003 with London centric local regional programming..

it's because of the tiff between STV and the rest of ITV.
it's broadcast to you - it's just that your receiver shows the local ITV
variant and hides the rest - presumably including ITV HD if that's what
freesat chooses to do.

I take it then that you can't change the postcode every time you want to
watch ITV HD? it can't be that simple surely?

I mean you can get all the regional ITV channels on Sky. My wife was not
happy when STV stopped showing the Bill and now watches ITV London instead
of STV

I don't think you need to do that (unless you want ITV London only).
All Freesat viewers get ITV London on channel 977 - just select that
to get through to the ITV HD red button service, while keeping STV on
103.

Cheers,
David.

The postcode is entered when you initially scan for channels.

Afterwards, on my box, I have the option via the set-up menu to select
any of the BBC regional channels but don't have the ability to select a
different ITV region unless I scan again.

All the ITV regions are still available in the non-freesat mode of
operation but it appears that Freesat box manufacturers have crippled
some of the box's capabilities due to licensing restrictions,
possibly to do with the wishes of the advertisers on the commercial
channels.

It may be possible on some boxes to have STV SD set via the initial scan
using the post code and ITV HD added to the list as a non-Freesat
channel or via a manual scan.

I have decided against freesat HD as I would also have to buy a new HD telly
and since there are only 2 channels to watch it aint cost effective at the
moment.

UNLESS! other than Sky and freeview, is there any way to watch more than 2
HD channels with a satellite receiver that is not freesat, if such a thing
exists? or is the only way Sky? Do Sky have a monopoly of all the HD
channels or can any of them be watched on another type of satellite
receiver? Are the only HD channels that are not encrypted BBC and soon to be
ITV?

All this is for a second telly in my bedroom as I already have Sky + I just
don't want to fork out any more money to Sky.
