Whilst enquiring about LCD TVs yesterday it was brought to my
attention that LCD units are very cheap at the moment for one
good reason - product update.

It seems new ranges will be on the market soon after Easter and
most of them will have Freeview HD built-in as standard. Of
course they will be more expensive - on a 26-32" set something
around £50-£80 higher, but given that a Humax Freeview HD box
costs top side of £150 at the moment it has to be a good deal.

On the other hand, if prices get slashed to remove stock it might
be an idea to buy an established set and then get an external HD
box (a) when they get cheaper and (b) when the initial software
bugs have been ironed out.

Also, is LED not just round the corner? This is said to use less
electricity and I assume the screen has a longer life expectancy as
LEDs seem to last for ever.

Why would HD TVs be the new standard when 50% of the country won't be able
to use them for 2 years?

Why would anybody in the 50% pay over the odds now for something that they
can't use, when in 2 years time they will be 200 pounds cheaper

shops had HD sets on sale years before there was any HD material to watch on
them.

Nah, be quick... Do the reverse.

Buy one now before they ditch SD 4:3 support, SCART, PAL, Analogue UHF,
VGA D-SUB, S-Video and Composite Video !!

Hmm, How cheap could they make a set if they jetisoned all the above?

Did they?

Flat Panels pre-dated HD sources but they were mostly 480p ones.
By the time HD ready panels were available to ordinary consumers at sensible
prices there were HD games consoles and Satellite channels.

Sets are out now. They are roughly the same price or lower than the
outgoing sets, but these have now of course been reduced to clear. OK
if you don't want Freeview HD or the Internet connectivity, and now at
a bargain price.

OLEDs you mean ? Trouble is the O stands for Organic, and therefore a clue to
the expected service life of such displays AIUI ?

no way - you could buy 720p sets - or in the case of plasmas, 1024x768/720
ones before the 360 and ps3 surfaced.
and sky hd really hasn't been around for that long at all.
sure they are cheaper now but i've had my HDTV for six years and they were
on sale before then.

I don't think so! FreeviewHD sets come at a significant premium at the
moment. Unless people HAVE this in their area now it may well be worth
waiting until it is!
