Nobody can find out anything by knowing your ISP, unlike the I/P address. I dont know the difference. I just want to hide whichever it is that indentifies me and my computer preferably without moving from BT. Other than that I have been told to get a different provider on a mobile system but thats expensive and seems a waste of money for nothing really. I already pay out for BT. |

I ought to add to this I have a firewall up which I thought should prevent any kind of identification ( thought wrong obviously). The other probably daft question to you would be is it my computer or my telephone line that gets recognised? I have another computer ( lap top) which I have never used to connect to the internet but it would still have to go through my BT line. I just want to know how other people have got round this issue. There must be a way round if you know ( which I don't) as people are doing it all the time. |

I have checked my own IP address and BT use a dynamic one according to their web site ? I checked it, it has changed from the one I used this morning. It keeps changing, so how are they identifying me? Anyone with technical knowledge help me out here? Loads of people use BT, how can they get me through that? If I use a proxy server will that cover everything up? Help please |

Before getting involved in proxey servers and I/P 's how about considering that the site has put some tracking cookie on your machine that identifies it. Install CCleaner on your machine and use it to clean your computer: http://www.piriform.com/ It's perfectly safe and easy to use and you will still be able to use your machine with sites that use cookies for on-line shopping. Use it every day ! It should enable you to return to the site as virgin user with no history. Perhaps that will solve your troubles. Roger R |

I will try and explain but this may sound more sinister than it is. I use my computer to write to a social networking group/message board. There was a bit of a hassle there and someone identified me in RL and got me banned. Don't ask for details please. Anyway, I changed names and thought it would be OK. Lots of people on this site have got banned and returned under other names. However the site are using my IP address to " recognise" me and all my new " names" get deleted - although I think that someone might be guessing at it being me and are reporting it first because one name lasted several months and another ( because it was one I had used years ago) got deleted immediately) . I haven't done anything to hurt anyone and I am genuine. I just got tied up in this hassle accidently. The board is moderated obviously. You do not have to say much to be banned! I found out that most of those who return successfully are changing ISP or using a proxy server ( I think) . I just want to know how it works. I don't want to change ISP's. I just want to hide it so they cannot trace posts back to me. As I said, it sounds more sinister than it really is. Thanks for any help. Blimey! The worst forum I know of is rigorously policed by the Gestapo force of the London Borough of Redbridge: http://www.redbridge.gov.uk/forum/ You seem to have found one that's worse! -- Terry |

If that doesn't work, there are a couple of other things you can try: I assume that you are not using the same e-mail address to register under different names? (My local government Gestapo regulated forum won't let you do that.) If you are, change it! (Most ISPs allow you lots of e-mail addresses and you can always use hotmail, yahoo, etc.,) Perhaps they're being really devious and logging your MAC (Media Access Control) address, which is a unique address allocated to every network adaptor. If they've logged the address of your BT network adaptor/router (in which case, you've really got a problem) it will be the MAC address of your PC's network adaptor. You mentioned another PC - try that instead and see what happens. Alternatively, how is your current PC connected to BT? Are their any alternatives? For example, if you have a wireless connection, what physical (USB, Ethernet) connectivity is there? Most PCs have 3 methods of connecting to the internet these days - Wireless, USB, Ethernet - and each interface has a unique MAC address, so if you use a different connector, your MAC address will change. Good luck! (My money's on the tracking cookie theory, though) -- Terry |

Thanks for the suggestion. If that doesn't work, there are a couple of other things you can try: I assume that you are not using the same e-mail address to register under different names? (My local government Gestapo regulated forum won't let you do that.) Each time I have re registered using a hotmail address. I did register one with my BT sub e mail accounts . Trouble is I cannot remember the password so I am not using it. But I know they could not have found it ( as I dont use it) and they send me e mails inviting me to their site on it still. If you are, change it! (Most ISPs allow you lots of e-mail addresses and you can always use hotmail, yahoo, etc.,) Perhaps they're being really devious and logging your MAC (Media Access Control) address, which is a unique address allocated to every network adaptor. Alternatively, how is your current PC connected to BT? I connect via a BT voyager cable link to broadband. Are their any alternatives? Not unless I buy another one especially. So if all else fails you are suggesting that if I get a BT home hub ( wi fi) they shouldnt be able to identify me? Thanks for the info |
