Which seems a pity, as along with the World Cup, IMO it would also provide a boost for the fledgling DVB T2 service. You've got to view it from F1's perspective, the UK's tiny little DVB-T2 and FTA HD markets mean virtually nothing to them. Just as 16:9 SD output did for many years, because the UK, rather eccentrically as viewed internationally, stood alone for the early part of the last decade with 16:9 FHA mainstream broadcasts. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

Or is my recollection in error? From document at http://aei.pitt.edu/archive/00003059/01/000063.PDF The Action Plan for the Introduction of Advanced Television Services in Europe was established by the Council Decision of 22 July 199 with the objective of ensuring the accelerated development of the market for advanced television services in Europe using the wide-screen 16:9 format. The approach is based on stimulating the broadcasting and programme productionelements in the value chain so that all the different actors and elements in the television services chain necessary to deliver 16:9 services to the home can fall into place. This is acondition for achieving the accelerated development of the market for 16:9 services. Community funds of up to *228 MECU* were foreseen for the period mid-1993 until mid-1997 in order to contribute towards the additional costs of introducing the 16:9 format. Broadcasters and Programme Producers were entitled to apply for this funding through calls for proposal. |

There might well have have been, but name me one EU broadcaster other than our own that were routinely broadcasting 16:9 FHA on DVB platforms 10 years ago ? I agree the Germans and Benelux mob were broadcasting in PAL+, but that was about it. Ivan said... Does anyone know if formula one will be shown in HD this year, or will it be as slow in coming as it was with widescreen? No. The BBC says: "We will not be able to provide F1 coverage in high definition this year. The BBC relies on Formula 1 Management (FOM) for the provision of all of its live pictures and as such the broadcasting of high definition pictures is dependent upon whether FOM uses HD cameras or not." And at present, FOM don't have HD cameras, and AFAIK have no plans to introduce them anytime soon. Sadly, we've lost one of the red button channels due to the DVB HD start up, so the on board is going split screen this year, but on the bright side we still get all the practice sessions on 301. -- Ken O'Meara http://www.btinternet.com/~unsteadyken/ |

I agree the Germans and Benelux mob were broadcasting in PAL+, but that was about it. Yes so they were transmitting in widescreen, and it was not just the UKofGB&NI. Of course the whole point of the EU funding was to promote the production of 16:9 material, and once it became standard, the funding was withdrawn because it was no longer needed. |
