I use freeview in my truck on a little portable but the aerial I have is
only a small mag mount thingy and reception isnt the best. There is an
aerial for sale on ebay NV 536 96db Car TV Antenna (item no 120539720437)
which is quite expensive at £50+ anyone give me a clue if its worth the
money?

96dB over what??????
No don't touch that, it will be little better than a piece of wet string.
You wouldn't expect an omni-directional aerial to work well on your
house, so why should it work on a (stationary) vehicle?

What you want is something that can be rigged up quickly when you need it
be of reasonable small size and weight, but it's not going to be tiny if it's going to be effective,
and have the ability to be rotated 360 deg
so as to point to the best transmitter available *also* the plane of the elements
should be able to twist 90 deg so as to accommodate vertically and horizontally
polarised transmissions and must be wideband so as to be able to receive any
UHF transmission available
Something like this Log Periodic`.

Bill will be along in a minute with some mounting ideas.

Can't say whether they would work for you.

They are rebranded NecVox Ant-356 aerials

A bit overpriced from that supplier.

Others are offering for £25

and some are offering 2 for £59

Well I wouldn't buy that if I were you. If you buy the 2010 TV
Viewer's Guide there's a very good article on this subject.

Have a look at http://www.leisurepower.co.uk/acatalog/Aerials.html

The Maxview indoor UHF TV aerial costing £11 may be worth considering.

Problem with all these omnis is that they tend to just have an amplifier.
tThe problem is you will pick up all reflections, and other transmitters
etc, and its the signal quality that matters to freeview, not the outright
strength. I have a couple of friends with caravans and I do not think anyone
has solved this yet. Many are going satalite and getting portable dishes.

How much structural hacking is acceptable for your truck?

Caravans and camper vans have this kind of thing sorted but for something
integrated you will probably need an extending mast which goes through the
roof.

We have an aerial in our camper which extends through the roof, can be
horizonatal or vertical, and rotates through 360 degrees.
It also has an amplifier which does make a difference.

The performance is pretty good - I can get all the muxes from Sudbury when
the van is parked in the drive (this is a poor reception area) and I have
managed reasonable reception on the continent as well.

Depending on the size of your truck I would look at caravan and camping
suppliers instead of car accessories.

I had something a bit like that only a log periodic.

Where I was staying was hidden from Crystal Palace and Reigate by
hills, the roof aerial was turned to Midhurst and the riggers reckoned
they wouldn't waste their time on the nearer transmitters.

The little indoor LP when strategically placed could pull in a usable
signal from Reigate most of the time though wet leaves on the trees
(probably) made it stutter a bit and it was very sensitive to location
within the (downstairs) room.
