Read the instruction manual or search for it online.

Let's start with...

What *exactly* are you trying to do?
In what screen?
What TAPs have you got loaded?
How much disk space do you have left?

The machine isn't 'seeing' the hard drive which could mean that the
drive is broken or has become disconnected.

Or two recordings are already in progress.

Or two timers are set and attempting another recording would cause a
clash.

Or the short lead between the two tuners has become dislodged or
damaged. (only one turner is active).

Or the local transmitter is undergoing engineering work and the MUX is
transmitting at reduced power and not being received by the box in a
reliable manner.

Or the software has crashed and a reboot is required - by turning the
box off at the mains plug for two minutes.

Or a third party software (TAP) has a corrupted file which either needs
to be fixed or deleted. The Toppy can be started without starting up the
TAPs to see if this is the problem.

On a more serious note, on 5800 of a certain age one or more of the PSU
capacitors fail. A DIY repair is available for around a fiver.

My recommendation would be to ask in the Topfield user forums at
http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/index.php

You need to give a lot more information about which firmware and TAPs
are running.

Can you previous recordings on the hard disk be seen? Can previous
recording be played back?

This sound like the capacitor problem to me (and from my own experience last
summer).

Basically as the Toppy ages and suffers from heat exposure, the capacitors
to the power supply slowly cook and then fail.

When the capacitors finally fail, the power supply still works but the PSU
has insufficient power output to power both the motherboard, tuner, and hard
drive. So she starts up OK, but as the hard drive spins up for the first
time, she then conks out and reboots.

You have 3 options for repair:

- Change the capacitors on the motherboard as hundreds of people have done.
It took me a mere 2 hours and cost £6. If you are not someone who can
solder, then may be a friend can do this. The website toppy.org.uk now has
this repair well documented. Apparently some Toppy users will even help out
fellow users if asked nicely.

- Take it to a repair shop.

- Contact the uk dealer, turbosat.co.uk who will change the PSU for I
understand under £100.

Once repaired, there is no significant reason whilst one could not expect a
good few more years service out of the Toppy which bridges the gap until the
next model comes along.
