I notice that the Humax link on that page only goes to a page
of Korean??? text! I presume this is what they meant to link
to..

"Play media contents in external HDD or memory through USB (MP3, JPG,
XViD)".. I wonder, does 'play media contents' mean that it's possible to
'record' actual programme content onto an external HDD or flash memory
and

No.

play it back, or is it merely a way of playing back Xvid/Divx files
through the stb?. if the former, then at long last (for a major
manufacturer) it will be a big step in the right direction, in which case
I shall definitely be buying one.

There are (SD) PVRs that can do this, such as the Grundig GUDB20USB2.
They are however (in general) rumoured to be of poor build quality.

Humax have said that they will eventually release a software upgrade for
their HD box so that it can record via USB, but personally, I wouldn't buy
on the strength of such a promise.

I own one of the aforementioned Grundig boxes which works well within the
very basic limits of what its intended to do, i.e. deliver .TS files to a
USB flash memory stick or an external HDD, which has the annoying feature of
breaking a slightly overrunning (more than an hour) programme into two
parts, because of the choice of FAT 32.
I'm now waiting for a manufacturer to take the plunge and deliver something
decent to the market, which has HDMI up scaling, twin tuners, NTFS, record
in different qualities using MP4/Divx and of course SD card compatibility,
as well as USB flash memory stick.
However despite all of the technology being readily available, for some
reason no one appears to want to produce anything like it, so far the most
plausible reason I've read is that the original intention of VHS was merely
for time shifting, which meant that a viewer was supposed to record a
programme, watch it and then delete it, the current setup of having
broadcast quality material stored on a hard drive, which in most cases (for
the majority of viewers at least) is difficult and time consuming to
extract, edit and archive, suits the broadcasters and copy write holders
down to the ground, whether that's true or not I don't know, but like I
said, it does sound to be quite a plausible explanation.

I notice the Adult social care 'big debate' uses words like care

That would obviously be "Care IN The Community"

Well BBC Radio 2 has become the rest home for ageing BBC Radio 1
presenters, has it not?

I refuse to use it. I may have lost the battle with overarching, which used
to be two words as well, but instore is just downright stupid.

They only consider the attributive use. As a predicate it should be
"in store".

It's an uphill struggle aginst these unnecessary compounds.

I'm a great believer in hyphens (and brackets) - but I have my doubts
about colons and semi-colons.
