If that aerial is doing anything useful it might be because the reflector is back to front. It looks as though it would reflect a signal coming from the side through 90 degrees on to the dipole. Ah, but it's well sheltered by the apex of the roof ... -- Terry |

Is it that far off beam assuming the Sky dish is correct?.. It may not be easy to see but your looking at the dish from behind. The road is not quite north/south but slewed a bit anti clockwise. Crystal Palace is ~30° west of south but the aerial is not pointing directly across the road but a bit to the right so, without going back with a protractor, I'd say it's at least 70° off target. |

Sure it's not pointing at some 'fill in' transmitter because the 'main' one isn't too good due to local conditions? You see lots of that in Kingston which is nominally covered by CP. -- *Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

Brings back memories of the Colditz series. Are things really that bad round there that they have to cover the building from top to bottom with barbed wire and protect the windows with caging. Is it designed to keep people out, or in? Well, there's a fairly troublesome area to the south but I haven't noticed any other buildings protected like this - on the other hand, I've never really looked! It isn't barbed wire, by the way - there are grilles over the windows but you may be getting confused by strings of miniature lights hanging down the building. I've never had cause to go near it after dark but the Sikh temples in the area are festooned with the things! I can't help suspecting that almost every building regulation concerning fire and public safety must be contravened there. What happens if there's a fire on the ground floor trapping many upstairs. How are the Fire Brigade supposed to evacuate people through the windows? I've had a good look at the original picture in detail and I can't see anything that a fireman's trusty axe shouldn't be able to deal with very easily. I thought of that, but there aren't many which get in to Ilford - not that Guildford, Hemel or High Wycombe really "get into" Kingston, but at least they're ghost-free. of course, another alternative is that it is actually a transmitting aerial sending a signal from, perhaps, a satellite service to somewhere nearby. Came across this situation in Shepherds Bush some years ago. -- From KT24 Using a RISC OS computer running v5.16 |
