stay clear or is it worth a punt at £39.99 with a £3 discount code as well.

There is NO letter "S" on the end of MAPLIN. The name is MAPLIN.
You can use your web browser to look for information about products.

Yes thank you for input. Dont worry the schools are back tomorrow & you will able be to practice your english punctuation on your
pupils.

I had looked at reviews, but I thought someone might have bought/used one on here, next time fella/lady dont bother wasting your
valuable muscle power on the keyboard, use them for something worth while, like scratching your arse !!!

Looks like a 80Gig Vestel box. I have two of them, both branded Digihome, although
the front panels are slightly different.

They are nice units and work very well. One thing though, they stopped
working when Winter Hill went DSO but someone on this group pointed
me to the latest firmware which resolves the problem and can be transferred
using the RS232 on the back.

It would be nice to think that "refurbished" includes this re-flash but I don't know.

They will no doubt be Supermarket returns, in most cases they will not have been faulty,
just someone overly optimistic about the set-top aerial in the bedroom etc.

I ordered one from Maplin and it was delivered about 5 minutes ago. The
brandname is Dual.

It is a Dual brand, model DPVR801.

I left it for about 24-hrs before powering it up. It was very cold when
it was delivered so I gave it time to acclimatise.

It seems to work the way it should.

It does not have series-link recording. Recording is by specified start
and end times with provision for padding (2mins each end by default).
There is a choice of daily, weekly or once only recording for each timer
setting.

There is no provision for copying recordings to external media other
than by playing a recording at normal speed to an external recorder,
DVD, VHS or whatever (the manual calls it "Archiving"). It does have
limited editing abilities to select which part of a recording should be
played out to an external unit. It is also possible to add chapter
markers to a recording and use those in archiving.

One feature that I've found surprisingly satisfying is that the EPG
display lists 11 channels on the screen rather than the normal 6 or 7.

I am close to the Divis transmitter but there is a hill, houses and
trees in the way so the signals are not perfect, particularly UHF CH 48.
However the box seems to handle the incoming signals from the loft
aerial without any excitement.

The technical specs say:

DEMODULATION
COFDM with 2k/8k FFT mode
FEC for all DVB modes (Automatically found)

so it should survive DSO.

So far, so good. I'm happy with what it does for the price.

Thanks - useful info!

Sounds like it *doesn't* have Freeview+ (or whatever it's now called)?

It's a Vestal clone. Their EPG is excellent compared with some others

I'm not sure exactly what is covered by Freeview+. This box does have
"Pause and rewind Live digital TV" (wording copied from the Maplin
webpage.)

[I've just been reminded that Freeview+ is the *current* name for what used
to be called "Freeview Playback"]

According to Wikipedia, the features which all Freeview+ devices must have
a
a.. At least 8 Day Electronic Programme Guide (EPG)
b.. Series Link (one timer to record whole series)
c.. Record split programmes as one programme
d.. Offer to record related programme
e.. Record alternative showing if there is a time conflict
f.. Schedule changes updated in standby (e.g. scheduled recording starting
early)
g.. Accurate recording (equivalent to PDC - programmes are recorded based
on signals from the broadcaster rather than scheduled time)
The last of these would be of the greatest interest to me, since programmes
are often screened at slightly different times from those scheduled, and I
currently use PDC on my old VCR - so a PVR without it would be less good in
this respect.
