Default 'Which' support for BBC Freesat HD quality

A promo for 'You and Yours' at lunch time today said that a new report by
'the consumer organisation' - 'Which' on Freesat HD supports the BBC view
that the picture quality is perfectly good.

Can't find this report on 'Which' site, nor anything about it on the BBC,
however the 'You and Yours' R4 programme is supposed to cover it tomorrow
(Wednesday) .

As 'Which' rate things in blobs, presumably as long as there are at least
five blobs of colour on the screen it's top quality as far as they are
concerned !

I always greatly respected "Which" and their unbiased careful testing.

Except in areas that I have expertise in, where they are always awful.

Having spoken to other people (with other areas of expertise) they said the same!

Which is a bugger, really.

I used to read Which reviews of cameras (mostly 35mm SLRs).
They always went for "the most bang for your bucks" and didn't place much,
if any, emphasis on quality.

Regards,
Roger.

They've had very little, if anything, to say about dreadful DAB sound
quality.

So did I in the days when they tested things in labs for quantifiable
things. With BBC HD they are reported* to have done their more modern
thing of a "viewing panel".

Out of interest, how does one get a quantified, reproducible measure of
quality with compressed, moving pictures?

Well their income tax guide used to accurate - because it was checked in
advance by the Inland Revenue

I think they tend to be low tech. Its like comparing them with an
audiophile review.
I suppose it has its uses from the reliability standpoint etc, but one never
recons they were anything on the technicalities, therefore how would they
know where the lower than optimum quality was coming from.

Me too.

Mostly I would agree with you there.

However "Which?" (Consumers Association) is the only truely
independent organisation that I know of that reviews products.

In the past their reviews of common items like toasters etc were great
but, IMHO, they have strayed outside their area of expertise trying to
review high-tech items, for example.

Their articles on computers, for example, are often incorrect as they
oversimplify to such an extent that the meaning is changed.
