Default Sony 50" Grand Wega Discontinued?

Purchased a Sony Grand Wega LCD widescreen projection HDTV monitor
almost a month ago from Circuit City. The past couple of days it didn't
want to turn on. At times I would hear a buzzing sound like high voltage
and the power on/standby light would flash. After about 20 seconds the
red lamp light would come on. Manual says that the lamp needs replaced.
Called CC for I want to replace it and they are out of them as well as
all the other CC stores in my area. Return desk girl said they may be
discontinuing them. I thought this set had just come out. How long has
this set been out?
I am on a list waiting for another one to come in.

They aren't being discontinued, Sony is just being Sony. The haven't stocked
enought of anything in the last couple of years to keep the shelves full.

Actually, there's a problem with the lenticular screen. If you've shopped
around other brands at all, you'll see that the 50" Sony, Hitachi, and
Panasonic LCD RPTV's are hard to get, same with the 50" Samsung DLP. From
what my buyer has been told, and then told me, there's only one company
making the lenticular screen for most of these brands, and that company is
seriously backed up in production. I don't know if that's the absolute truth
or not, but that's what we've been told. Your 50WE610 is still available,
but it probably won't get back in stock until mid-January.

Thanks on the news. Guess I'll just have to wait for the call from CC.
Just hope I don't have any problems returning it when they finally get
some in. The person I spoke to said there would be no problem.

Sounds like you are familiar with this set. Question, What is the
buzzing sound I hear during this problem? I never would have thought
that there was high voltage in this type set. After the arcing I can
even smell ozone in the air. The sound that I hear is coming from the
left of where the bulb is installed. Bulb power supply maybe? If I
remove the bulb and plug it back in the set will then turn on.

I'm not an engineer or service guy at all, but my first guess would be a
power supply. That should be an easy problem to fix.

We're shopping for a big new rptv too -- CC salesman told us a few days
ago that 50" sets are the hottest size nowadays -- big enough to feel
theater like but small enough to be ok in most homes -- and supplies are
way stretched. Above and below 50", you can usually get one delivered
pronto. But the wait on the 60" Hitachi LCD, for example, is running
into months.

Those big rpLCDs are nice, eh?
