replace the box with a second hand one, will i need it paired by sky?
(is the multiroom callback based on the box number or card number?)

I've just replaced my standard Sky box with a 2nd hand Sky+ box. I had to
ring Sky to have the box authorised, so I'd imagine you'll have to do the
same.

Yes.

You will need to install the replacement box and insert your
viewing card.

You will probably receive an error message, advising you that you
have inserted an incorrect card. Ignore that message. Make sure
you can see the EPG and can receive the Free to Air Channels (BBC
etc).

Then, press Services on your remote control, followed by 4
(System Setup), followed by 5 (System Details). Leave the System
Details on screen, because you will require the information
subsequently.

Telephone Sky on 0844 241 4141. Explain that you have changed
your receiver and ask them to pair your viewing card with the
replacement receiver.

Sky will ask you for various details, including your name,
address, postcode, inside leg measurement, etc - to identify your
subscription. They will also require information from the System
Details screen. If I recall correctly, they will require the
Model Number and/or Version Number, the Serial Number of the
Receiver, and your Number of your Viewing Card .

Sky will broadcast a signal via the satellite, to pair your card
to the new receiver.

I can't tell you whether subsequent multi-room call-backs will be
based upon the Card Number only - or upon the Box Number and Card
Number. It doesn't really matter (as far as you are concerned),
because a Multi-room viewing card will only work in a receiver
that has been paired to that card.

It's the card, they don't mind what box it is in. You will need to call sky
to get it paired, you won't get any premium channels untill you do.

Do they not fix their own boxes though?

If you are referring to Sky, then "THEY" don't own the receivers.
So no, they don't fix their own boxes.

Sky do provide service calls and if the original installation is
out of warranty, the call-out costs £65.

The fixed price, which includes all materials and labour, is
probably less than cost and if necessary, the service engineer
will replace a defective receiver with a reconditioned model
(depending upon what is on his van). If you are lucky, the
engineer may even supply a new receiver. The repair and
replacement receiver comes with a three-month warranty.
