What is all this hide and show quoted text. I don't know what you are on
about.

Anyway, I listen, and it speaks. I'd need to be warned to move a
character at a time if the word in question is spelled in a way which
sounds right, but is not spelled right. The machine is indeed solid state
and thick!

So what does it do about 'color' and 'colour'? Does it put on an American
accent for the US spelling? ;-

(I don't think you've said what it does about smileys - maybe it bursts out
laughing.)

No, the government have decided to use it to control the speed of your
vehicle so they can save money on signs and speed cameras.

I used to have a girlfriend, that loved it when I drove over cattle grids.

You might have loved it as well if she had been sitting on your lap at the
time.

And the advert never mentioned the nasty word 'subscription' either.
Thus one assumes its just an ordinary sat nav if you do not cough up more
readies. I guess they are getting people used to this when the EU sats go
up and the service is charged for.

Brian has anyone ever flamed you for top posting? As you are blind I can
forgive this faux pas and am just amazed you can actually take part in
conversations on usenet. Well done.

They have, but apparently it's easier for him so we let him off.

I've had a few people riding pillion that have commented on cattle grids and
cobbles...

Then again, my suspension jammed right after the last MOT and I've not got
around to fixing it yet

Unfortunately, they have not cracked the artificial Guide Dog as yet.

Are there enough disadvantages to having a guide dog, if you have one,
that you'd consider replacing it with a machine?
This
means, presumably, that the sat nav is far less intelligent than a Labrador.

Indeed, although it doesn't crap on the carpet if I forget to take it
out for a walk at the right time so I can see some advantages.

HD satnav must be one which can not only tell which road you are on, but
also which lane you are in.

Although the sat nav on my phone doesn't, Google maps on the same device
does if I enable satellite view.

Ah yes, solid state. I wonder what proportion of owners of those leatherette-bound
trannys had the slightest clue of what solid state meant.

These people are not engineers. They are operatives. You do proper
engineers a great dis-service by mis-using words like this in an attempt
to look 'clever'.

Paul, I think Brian was being ironic.

Sadly, I don't think so.

In any case, I know you are very keen to preserve your status,

I don't have any status. I've known this for a long time.
The latest buzz word seems to be "technologist" at my place of employ - an
organisation which has no interest in engineers or engineering and wishes
it could get rid of all of them. Hell, they've even lumped them all into
a journalism division.

but the word engineer is now so devalued

The E word is definitely out of favour because of its mis-usage by ignorant
people trying to look clever:
Delivery engineer = van driver
Refuse disposal engineer = bin man
Pest control engineer = rat catcher

that I think you'd better start to call yourself something else.

Yes, I could be a doctor, or professor or lawyer... or anything else really.

Seems to me that job titles are somewhat pointless and anachronistic these
days, as nobody wants to be called what they are, then they try and find
something trendy sounding which they hope nobody else understands what it
means.

I mean, I've even heard people who fix TV distribution systems call
themselves 'engineers'!

I don't see a problem with this, for people like yourself. Obviously the
cowboys wouldn't fit in here.

And here's worse, much worse. Last week a management agency received
an angry letter from a resident. She lives in a complex where there is
no DTT and no possibility of it. She'd had a telly delivered and 'set
up' by a major retail chain. "The delivery engineer had installed sets
throughout Sheffield and assured me that he had never had any
difficulty tuning all the channels in, so the new aerial system must
be defective. At my own expense I have had an aerial engineer of high
repute come and test the aerial and he installed a digital box and now
I can get hundreds of channels, so that proves your aerial man did not
do a proper job." I should mention that the 'digital box' was a
Freesat box. The system carries satellite signals of course.

Clueless aren't they...

No they aren't.

Engineers of chaos I'd suggest.

Frankly, you haven't a clue.
