Well, Its very much like the digital tag on radios, where you did not get a
digital mode, just a readout.
Unfortunately, either deliberately or because they are thick, the shops will
still give e misleading info about the product they want to sell. Maybe it
is the law makers who need to be on the ball insisting on a simple statement
of what broadcasts can be received in a manner anyone can understand instead
of dressing it up in technospeak.

I'm thinking of warning local people about buying a HD TV and expecting to
get Freeview HD when it arrives.

I'm trying to make it accurate, and easy to understand, and I'd appreciate
you chaps telling me what you think .

"
Anyone thinking about buying a new TV, is probably also thinking HD,
especially since HD broadcasts begin on Freeview next Spring in line with
the Digital Switch-over/Analogue Switch-off from the West transmitter at
Mendip.

So, the obvious choice is a HD TV that has an integrated Freeview digital
tuner.

Unfortunately, the Freeview HD TVs that are currently available will not
receive "High Definition" pictures, from an aerial because they only have
"Standard Definition" tuners.

There are no HD TV receivers available yet, and there won't be until next
year.

This means that anyone who buys a Freeview HD TV now, will have to either
replace it, for one with a HD tuner, or buy a Freeview HD set-top box.

So, if you must buy before next Spring, the best solution is to buy a HD
TV without a built-in tuner, and attach a cheap Freeview box that you
won't mind upgrading next year.

Please note this only applies to Freeview from an aerial, not Satellite,
Cable or HD pictures from other sources, BluRay DVD, Games Consoles etc."

Er, it does equally apply to satellite.

A HD TV will not necessarily get you HD from this source there are some
models which will. The HD logo on a TV doesn't differentiate between a
TV that does and one that does not directly decode HD broadcasts.

That is the difference between a radio with digital circuitry (eg
computerised PLL synthesiser tuners, DSP filters and demodulators etc)
for receiving analogue (AM, FM) transmissions and radios for receiving
digitally encoded transmissions (eg PCM, DAB). Both types can
legitimately be described as 'digital radios'.

Far too complicated IMHO. The public are going to switch off their
minds
after a few words.

The only hope is to put the punch line first - and as simply as
possible.

"You will need to buy a separate high defintion tuner to get
High Definition pictures" or something similar.

I agree, the message needs to be clear in the first sentence.

However its a complicated message not easily contained in one line.

My try:

Terrestrial High Definition (HD) TV has only started in a few places and is
broadcast in a completely new technical format that no existing HD TV set
whether marked HD-Ready, or Full HD can decode.

If you have just bought an HD-Ready or Full HD TV set, it won't receive the
new terrestrial HD service, a new HD set top box or a new integrated HD TV
specially designed for the new technology will be required, and none are on
the market yet. Sorry about that.

At present the only way to receive HD TV is by satellite dish which uses a
different technical format to terrestrial HD TV. A Freesat TV or set top
box or Sky box is the only way to receive HD television at present.

I failed too long...

The trouble is that everybody in this ng knows too much...

My own revised version would start as follows

"You won't get HD without an HD tuner"
and the second line would be

"..so ask for one."

Shush dear, you're showing yourself up. And don't do that 'NOT' thing.
If the intended irony of your remarks isn't obvious without it you
need to rethink the whole thing. Propping it up with a pointer like
that sounds very 'playground.' And please try not to call your betters
silly names. It only makes you appear rather infantile.
