Why don't you just receive the live TV on you TV via an aerial or other
normal consumer way? What is it you want to achieve exactly?

I have done this several ways but neither was reliable or satisfactory.

Your TV will mostly likely not receive anything the computer can output,
so you need a media player at the TV or perhaps a modulator at the PC
(such as an old VCR in AV-in mode).

Media players will generally work with files and some streaming
services, but I have as yet not found any that work satisfactorily well
to justify its position in the living room. Most of them seem to be
less stable than most PCs which in my book is just not good enough.

Nebula TV to Web browser - PC converts DTV to MPEG4 at low bit rates-
works over wireless but unstable, server crashes alot. Unusable in most
foreign hotels that advertise 'High speed' broadband due to throttling
or something, even though selectable bit rates from 128kbit/s to 1Mb/s,
maybe less can't remember.

Media player - Tried one before but so slow to work with, couldn't
manage music collection and kept crashing. Video over wireless needs to
be MPEG4 compression at least, normal TV MPEG2 too high for wireless
ethernet.

The best result I have had so far is iplayer on the Wii, its works so
far reliably but the Wii remote isn't exactly the right thing for the
job, and you need a keyboard for anything other than the popular programs.

If you can get composite video and audio out of the PC you could use an
old VCR as a modulator and make your own internal cable TV system like
some people do with Sky, but I guess you want to use your wireless router.

You need some sort of PC-like client attached to your TV. You could look up
the "v1 XBOX+linux" offering which is quite popular if you are a
techy/hacker or there are commercial devices to do this.

Ultimately you will end up wishing for a PC next to your TV. This one is
quite cheap.

Acer Aspire Revo R3600 Desktop PC, Atom 230 1.6GHz, 160GB HDD, 1 GB RAM,
HDMI, nVidia GeForce 9400 ION, WIFI, Linux
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167153 - Now £144.99 inc vat

Or repurpose an old laptop.

Thanks fellas

I think a laptop would be the best solution and then place it near the tv
and join them with an HDMI cable so I can watch the live footy from the pc
on the big screen.
Thanks for your help anyway.

I suggest you look at Mythbuntu...if you are fairly computer lit and of
a techie disposition it will do what you require.

Veering just a tad OT, someone once told me of a hard drive type thing
with a media player that you could fill up with videos and avis and
whatnot, and just connect it to your TV (hardwired...of which connection
I don't know). Now that sounds good....having a movie library and no
need to clutter up the place with DVD's....just rip them all to this
drive/thingymabob. Ring any bells with anyone?

Don't get too excited. Internet pictures are not always that good and a
fast moving sport like football puts the most strain on such feeds so on a
big screen you may find it unwatchable.

Google "Hisense 1080p HD Media Player". About £60 from Expansys.

Seems to have quite a following on various forumns.
