Default [OT] Wii and Internet Radio

A little OT but...

My wife is an American so we often listen to NPR from the states on a
Roberts Internet Radio.

Now that my children have a Wii, we have a browser (i.e.the Wii web browser)
in the living room but it won't "play" internet radio stations. Anyone know
a way of doing this from the Wii?

Seems Nintendo have gone out of their way to knobble as many useful features
on the Wii as possible - it won't even play DVDs!

Would you not just call up the radio stations web site like we do on a PC.

I watch TV on my PC here in UK and was surprised that when in Europe my lap
top would not allow me to. Seems the BBC some how check that one is in the
UK before letting you watch their programs.

Not doing as much on the Wii as other consoles, well other makes when we
bought were double the price so we assumed it was to keep the price down it
not having as many features.
Regards
David

How are you accessing the station? I must admit I've not tried web
radio via the Wii yet ( only connected it to the internet last week -
to use iPlayer) ; but in the past I've come across stations that won't
play from their web site but will if I go into the same station via
shoutcast or www.reciva.com.

Hi Paul
Opera (Wii's browser) may not support the necessary plugin used for
streaming audio. It s a bit handicapped like that.

just been trying it out. Seems like some work and some don't. Npr is
obviously one that doesn't. Not so much nintendo knobbling it more a
non standard browser on a non standard o/s. i just typed all this in
via google groups on the Wii. Won't be doing THAT again :/

Yeah, I got bored with that quickly and plugged a spare USB keyboard
in the back of the Wii; it won't work with my spare wireless keyboard
though for some reason. :-/

Umm, what do Reciva do other than forward the stream? Or to put it another
way, what are they getting out of my subscription?

You shouldn't have to subscribe to Reciva to check that radio stations
can be played back unless it's changed recently. I subscribe by
default as I have web radios with Reciva chipsets but I thought anyone
could use the site to check web streams.

No drivers for such a device. Might have a go to see if anything else
works usb wise.

Seems some people have some types of USB wireless keyboard working, so
some but limited support.
