A friend of mine couldn't believe his eyes when he saw this on the roof of a
house in Clevedon North Somerset, the had to rush home and grab his camera...

It's an HF amateur radio design called a Cobweb. It may be used for transmitting,
or just for listening.

The odd thing is there seems to be two different examples here, if so they are
far too close.

Use the magnifying glass on the right and then drag the picture down, you can even see the clothes pegs still on them, it looks
like some wag/s has managed to somehow get onto the roof and plant a them down a couple of chimney pots!

I think you are right in that one of these objects is a clothes dryer viz.
the one with the extra umbrella like struts.
The remaining object is a Cobwebb aerial, I am sure of that.

OK after looking ate some pictures of Cobwebb products I have
changed my mind. There clothes dryers.

When I first saw the thumbnails, I thought that this was some sort of
amateur radio 'cobweb' aerial (a compressed 2-element yagi).

inter alia.

But they do actually seem to be rotary clotheslines!

It's the clothes pegs that _really_ removes any doubts. ;-)

It's one o' them new fangled digital aerials.
The things that look like clothes pegs catch the digits as they whizz
past.
We'll all need one like that when they switch the telly off.

Go on, do tell what it is.
A friend of mine used to have heis aerial pushed through the roof tiles with a pop bottle sawn off to cover the hole. The rotation
was via string and pulleys fed through the ceiling in his bedroom to a crank handle. The bearings were mounted on the inside
wooden apex roof supports. Bearings is probably too good a word for them.

You are describing the classic Armstrong method of aerial rotation.
(Anyone who thinks I made that up should Google:

"Armstrong method" antenna)
