Anybody noticed poor audio on Saturday's SCD from Balckpool on the BBC HD
channel? It seemed very compressed and the background sounds squeezed out the main commentary and music at times. The audio was fine on SD. |

The audio sounded crap on SD as well, with the microphones on the presenters and judges clipping all the time. You could even hear them talking over Rod Stewart's performance opening lines. |

I notice less volume on the HD channel and have to turn volume up. -- Regards, David FREESAT HD as it is now it is a joke. |

Yes I noticed that. For BBC HD, DBviewer allows me to choose between MPEG and AC3 Audio formats. I don't think my Humax HDR has this option which is a pity, as it does not output LPCM on the S/PDIF optical port when receiving BBC HD. -- Michael Chare |

Yes I noticed that talk-over as well.
Sorry about the typo "Balckpool". Keyboard Chair interface module error again, unless the message has gone through the BBC's encoders and suffered a transposition error !! Steve. It might be something to do with the fact that the sound was in Dolby Surround on HD and, given the acoustics of the Tower Ballroom it was probably a nightmare in terms of mic placement and level control. However, that's no excuse. It should have been engineered to a much higher quality and the BBC, of all people, ought to know how to get it right. Chas |

This sort of prog will likely use a freelance sound mixer who is ex BBC or ITV. I know, it is absolutely stupid. I listen to some bits from outside
broadcasts and wince and reach for the off button. I think most of the engineers just shove everything on a limiter and go down the pub.
