Default HDMI to computer

I'm thinking of looking for a computer with an
HDMI interface to an HD TV. Any recommendations?

Lots of approaches out there.

I went with the Dell Hybrid. Designed to connect to your TV via HDMI or
DVI and very nice looking to go into your home theater setup.

Downside is that it is a bit pricey

You might just need a new graphics card. Will Blu-Ray, or other
H.264 sources, be involved?

Alternatively, among the "media servers" cropping up, small
footprint, almost universal codec playback, web access, and
support for swappable USB/SATA drives seem common.

Check out the "Dune HD" product list. The web browser is
primitive, but there's a new version in beta now. Here's one of
their latest hardware releases:

Use a DVIHDMI cable. If you need sound use a 3.5mmRCA cable.

Amazing capabilities! The user manual must be HUGE!-)

I'm puzzled by the statement "Accepting pre-orders for the Base 3.0 ONLY
4 left!" "pre" and "left" seem contradictory.

The Gigabyte / Phenom boards I bought recently (3 of them) all have on-
board 1080 graphics with DVI, HDMI and VGA ports. Also eSata,
firewire, SPDIF optical, 7.1 analog audio, com port, parallel port,
SATA RAID and a bazillion USBs. Check out the 785 series boards. Toss
in a 1.5T drive and a tuner card and you're all set.

Sorry, not my area. I do know that the units are based on the
Sigma Designs video processing chips. Their initial units used
version 8634, their newer units (3.0) are touted to be using a
later version. The units seem to have been selling well, so I'm
guessing that the site means that the next 4 orders can be
filled and the rest will be "pre" ordered (which may be Israeli
for backordered?).

There were no USA distributors when I bought the HD Center
through Canada, there are now several US names listed, but I
know nothing of them.

BTW, the PDF user manual is essential to anything other than
playback in this somewhat techie device. It's no help at all
in getting Unix and Windows to serve each other, which is not
your average homeowner's forte. I've done no more than access
my HTML index of videos from whatever PC system is up and
running at the time. I've had no need here to use the PCs as
a/v servers.

Just a bit of a warning.
I made a bad choice my self, buing a Hi-Den media player to watch my
digital pictures on the TV via the HDMI interface.

The pitfall I went into is that the luminance range is usually
different in computer use/ digital pictures (which use the full 8 bit
range 0-255) compared to TV use (which use a reduced range 16-235).

My Toshiba TV can not be adjusted to work with the full range and the
media player can not convert to the reduced range.
The result is lost shadow detail (into pitch black) and saturated
highs.

Check that the HDMI output and/or the TV can adapt to each other.
/Jan
