Default No Freeview for Elderly people since Sept. 30

Heard yesterday of 2 elderly non technical families that since Sept. 30 have
had to revert to analogue TV, they are not local to me so can't go and put
things in order for them, tried to help on phone but failed. They think
their TVs are faulty.
I wonder how many older people are like this, particulary when analogue
switch off comes and they have no analogue.
Is there any help available for the two families I mentioned?
I guess calling a dealer out will cost them money.

They could try the TVretune helpline : 08456 05 11 22

I have elderly friends that live in an upstairs flat in a bit of a scum
area of London, neighbours are not sadly trusted.

Neither of them are able to carry heavy goods in from a doorstep
delivery, and also due to other mobility problems are not able to reach
behind sets to fiddle with connections, press some of the 'difficult'
buttons, or even check what the model number is.

Things like a £30 DVD player when purchased are paid extra for
installation and purposely bought with an (expensive, good proportion of
the cost of the player) 2/3-year extended guarantee, on the grounds that
if something goes wrong with the thing - someone will come around to the
flat, climb the stairs, do the necessary mental / physical stuff and fix
the thing.

However, the retune thing for their Sony flat-panel was sorted by them
ringing the warranty helpline and a very switched-on telephone girl
successfully helped them through it. At least she had access to the
model number in her records to look up the correct guidence information.

Anyone else would have had to call round, and charge a call out fee (if
not me).

Very sad if they don't have a neighbour etc they could call on for help.
And 'we' could help by asking any elderly neighbours who don't have much
in the way of visitors if they need help in this way.

If they are families why don't the younger members help them ?

But don't worry, elderly people are good at managing perfectly well without
TV.

It may sound daft, but I do know that some branches of Age concern have
helped with this sort of thing. Certainly on the blind persons front, the
RNIB have had quite a few queries on this sort of problem, some they have
succeeded some not as there really are so many different systems out there
nobody could be an expert on all of the combinations!
