I have a scientific Atlanta dvr cable box from the cable company. I
would like to keep some tv episodes but this fills my box hard drive box up. Is there a way to record these to a computer or external hard drive in full resolution. And if so is this legal ? |

A few Cable boxes will allow you to plug in a External ESATA Hard drive to expand your storage capability, but most have that option disabled including my Comcast Box. |

Why is it not legal? I still have a couple of CSI NY episodes from last season that we haven't watched yet. I'm currently canning shows for next summer when all they do is give us reruns. G² |

I think that matter has already been settled back in the days of VCRs. The real issue is that although it may be legal to do so, it is not in the cable company's best interest to allow you to stockpile programming in a way that you could keep it even after you have dismissed their services. |

It is legal to keep them for personal use only. Since the cable companies provide the recording device they clearly are not requiring that you watch it NOW! :-) |

Is there a way to record these to a computer or external hard drive in full resolution. And if so is this legal ? Option 2 (if possible) Switch to Dish Network, with a 722 or 722k DVR. Records 3 HD shows at once, while watching 4th HD show previously recorded on DVR. AND, you can record HD shows onto an external 1TB hard drive. You can archive hard drives as needed. www.dishnetwork.com |

That is, if I have two or three archived external drives and the DVR fails, I lose access to all the "archived" material. So I'm curious if Dish network has the same setup. And.... if not... then is it possible to connect the hard drive to a different Dish DVR, say one in the bedroom, and so watch shows recorded in one room in a different room? |

Yes, but Tech support can alledgedly remarry the hard drive to the new reciever. No experience here one this action. And.... if not... then is it possible to connect the hard drive to a different Dish DVR, say one in the bedroom, and so watch shows recorded in one room in a different room? The 722 and 722k are both dual room DVRs, but only one can be HD. So one receiver can handle two rooms, one in HD, one in SD. Both users have their own record lists and preferences. I use mine in single mode, (one HD tv only), so not real familiar with this feature. You might ask at alt.dbs.echostar or call 1-800-333-DISH. And I think both users can access what stored on the external hard drive. The 722 is a pretty amazing machine, and you can hook it up to an ethernet connection, and download some movies for free. Other movies are PPV, some are in HD, some are in 1080p. D |

Watch them wherever and whenever you want to. Basically do anything you want to with them. I record all shows on one system and usually watch them in another room. Storage isn't a problem because you can have as many or as big a HDD as you want. And you can have as many tuners as you want. It is by far the best (and cheapest) solution. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org My Tivo Experience http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/tivo.htm Tivo HD/S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm AMD cpu help http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php |

I have read that Tivo divides the program between the internal and external drives. Thus, the external esata drive cannot be used to view shows on any other machine. It uses a cablecard that can be obtained from most cable companies. |
