BB started publishing in 1942, wasn't that too late for the mechanical
scan era?

That's interesting. Hard to get any new publishing venture off the ground
at the time, due to paper shortages.

Were you a fan of Bernard Babani books Bill? They certainly formed
the basis of my interest in electronics, and I had several penned by a
certain Clive Sinclair full of simple transistor radio circuits that I built
into plastic soap-boxes with components from Manchester's
Shudehill area.

Yes I was. I used to get them from a long-gone electronics shop in
Doncaster. It was good fun in those days. You could build simple circuits
and get a sense of achievement.

Never really did component stuff, but mention of Shudehill
triggers many memories. Bring back Proop's ;-)

I agree Bill, I think the kids miss out on so much nowadays, perhaps if they
were involved a bit more in hobbies like we used to be then there would be a
lot less antisocial behaviour. Funny thing, I was only thinking yesterday
that if I was keen enough to make one, where would I be able to purchase 23
white LEDs, a case with a lens and reflector, a three position push switch
and battery connectors for the princely sum of £2.00.. yes, that's what I
paid for a compact LED inspection lamp from our local 'Factory Outlet' shop.

Was that from the shop at the bottom of Oldham Road? Can't remember what
area it was in now, it is so long ago. :-((

I thought that the antisocial behaviour was the new hobby these days.

You are thinking of Globe Radio on Swan Street. One of the
guy's that ran it was from the USA, or perhaps Canada, I remember
him arguing with me that NTSC was better than PAL because you
had a hue control so you could set the colour anyway you wanted
it, while with PAL you are stuck with the hue the broadcaster thinks
is right. An interesting about-turn on the usual argument!

My favourite shop was NW Electrics around the corner on
Great Ancoats St.run by Fred, G3MAX

Amongst the pet-shops in Tib Street?
They always had a good selection of valves in stock.
