I can get good DAB Digital Radio reception on various mains and battery
powered receivers when upstairs in my house. They show full signal. Downstairs however, zilch. Not a burble. The set I'm interested in has a telescopic aerial connected to the body of the radio with a little screw. Is there any better aerial I can get which would attach to this screw fixing for the swivelling telescopic aerial which would get me a better reception and allow DAB downstairs? This is for the kitchen window sill so something strung around the window frame, I'm thinking of... Thanks and sorry if DAB Digital Radio is off topic here, couldn't find a better matching group. Gary When I had a similar problem with FM reception someone here suggested wrapping a few turns of single conductor wire (I used multi-strand wire, actually) around the telescopic aerial and leaving a long tail (in my case about 1 metre). This is not a pretty solution but works amazingly well for borderline FM (actually it's the radio that's borderline, not the signal....). I have no idea if it will work for DAB but it might be worth a try. Someone here will know. Chas |

Gary The whip aerial on a DAB set is likely to be efficient. To improve on it you need an external aerial mounted high on the roof, which you can usually connect to the screw. Bill |

Bill I presume the aerial is connected to the set via a length of coax? If so, what, if anything, do you do with the braid/screen? I always wondered. |

If so, what, if anything, do you do with the braid/screen? I always wondered. Well, this is where theory and practice part. Ideally the screw that holds the whip will be the non-ground side of an unbalanced 75 ohm aerial connection, so you will strive to connect the braid to the ground side and thus have a good match. But of course the screw could match to God knows what, but it isn't likely to be 75 ohm, and where do you find a ground connection? Luckily the losses caused by mismatch are not as earth-shattering as the purists would have us believe. Leave the braid disconnected and see what happens. Bill |

Bill Our Pure has a BNC on it, and judging by the size of the pin it is 50R. Has something changed in the industry or are they just 'overlooking' the mismatch? -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

But where do you connect the earth or braid?
