Default Labgear 2-way splitter

For the last week or so I have been trying to buy the Labgear FBS402
2-way splitter after seeing Bill Wright recommend it to someone in
this group.

It was listed in the Screwfix catalogue at £3.29 so first place of
call was my local Screwfix branch in nearby Widnes they had no stock,
dedided to try two other nearby branches based in Huyton and also
Aintree once again no stock.

Drove home and checked the Screwfix web site and the item which
previously had been listed as "back soon" was now showing as "in
stock" but was put off by the post and packing which was in the region
of £5.00 making a total price of something like £8.13.

I had a look at some other web sites such as CPC which listed it as
£3.11 with a handling charge of £5.99 making a total price including
VAT of £9.95.

The following morning whilst browsing a section of the Yellow Pages (I
need a new aerial) there was a listing for a fairly local aerial
company who also has a Trade/retail shop.

Paid them a visit and their price for the FBS402 was £5.99 which was
£2.70 dearer than Screwfix but at least they had them in stock and
were still cheaper than the web site prices when additional postal
charges were added.

What surprised me about the Screwfix branches was that although the
Screwfix website showed the 2-way splitter in stock it does not mean
that the branches will have stock.

The branches source their stock from two huge warehouses based around
the country whilst the web site sources their own stock.

Pity Screwfix do not allow you to check stock held in their branches
like B&Q DIY, which can save wasted journeys.

I kicked off about this in Screwfix some time ago and they posted the out of
stock item to me at home FOC the following day.
Not perfect, but helpful. Not sure if they still do that, it was in the
early days of their trade counters.

One of the branches (Widnes) was extremely helpful, they tried the two
warehouses and they had no stock.

They tried logging onto the Screwfix website and although at that time
the 2-way splitter was shown as being in stock the site would not
allow an order to proceed, by the time I arrived home and checked the
site it was once again showing the status of "back soon" for the item!

I wish that some of the aerial companies listed in the Yellow pages
would indicate whether they have a retail sales outlet for their
aerial products and accessories, it would make life a lot easier.

Plenty of others about that are just as good, if not better.
I wouldn't take his recommendation! Not one of the companies he slags
off for doing bad work has ever been named. Funny how he corrects,
or claims to correct bad workmanship but refuses to give company
details so the public can avoid them.

Screwfix are brilliant for mail order, but the shops are total ****e. I
wouldn't set foot in one again if I'd got galloping knob rot and they were
the only shop with antibiotics.

I'm begining to think you've got a screw loose.

I'm getting ever so tempted to start a mail order business. I used to do
mail order in the 1970s, and it was OK. I used to literally paste the
catalogue pages together. Amazingly we are still in contact with some of our
customers. They became friends. One bloke worked in a factory where they
made socks for soldiers and he sent me some. I still have them. I like doing
business like that.

I still have a document from this era. It came to us from rural Eire. It was
a brown paper bag. Written on it were the words 'Send an arial quick', and
an address, in crayon. It was accompanied by a money order for £50.

This was in the pre-internet days so magazine advertising was the only
option. I had a small ad in 'Television' that did quite well, but then
someone realised that there was money to be made, so they placed a full page
ad. There's no way the business available would pay for the ad. The idea was
to kill me off. It worked, because I wasn't really bothered. I did a bit
using Exchange and Mart, but then other things took my life over so I let it
peter out.

But things are different now, thanks to the net. So many times we have a
situation like this where someone on here wants some daft little thing, and
I'm itching to supply them. Fact is, these splitters are £1.81 plus VAT, so
it would be feasible to sell them mail order at, say £3.50.

Hmm. Shall I do it?

Bill

It's a poster commonly referred to as the Tiscali Idiot. He was posting
as "Clive" ) until fairly recently. He morphs
regularly once he figures he's ended up in enough killfiles and nobody
is responding to him.

He posts through Albasani, an anonymising news service, the classic sign
of a troll. Very typical cowardly act to take a pot shot at others
using a false name behind an anonymous service.

Instant killfile fodder.

I've not had a problem with them that would make me come to that
conclusion, the staff are a little dopey sometimes ( Saturday/Sunday
mornings, probably out on the lash the night before) and sometimes
things are out of stock but never to the extent that they're not worth a
visit. There's a Toolstation counter half a mile away so if SF are out
then TS will usually have what I need.
