In message , Brian Gaff
writes I think its a misunderstanding of what the timer was for. Brian The website shows that it has an "On/ / off timer". Hovering over the i-in-a-square shows "Enables the television to be preset to switch on and off". I can't see much scope for misunderstanding there. The current arrangement is an analogue set connected to a plug-in mains timer. This switches on at 06:45 and thereby acts as our alarm. I bought a Goodmans LD1546WD set on the basis of what was on the Comet site, i.e. that it has an on/off timer. Well, it doesn't. If I connect it to the existing mains timer it switches on into standby mode, which is useless for my purpose. Is this typical of LCD sets? My only experience is with our Philips Ambilight. Does anyone know of a set that would do what I want, i.e. switch on into proper ON mode? BTW, I can't access any of the Goodmans product pages, I get the message: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. ( Using XP Home SP3, IE6) If you use a mains timer most current TVs will come back on in stanby mode, if the TV has a timer just leave it plugged in to the mains all the time. That is what I intended to do, but the TV hasn't got a timer, despite the spec on the website. The timers on the sets that I've seen are for sending your chosen channel down the scart to your VCR/PVR for scheduled recording. They do this in standby. You wouldn't want it to come on if you were recording something when you were asleep. So in fact it does what it's meant to, but not what you want it to. The spec states quite clearly that it's about a timer for switching the set on and off. See http://tinyurl.com/nham56 -- Peter Ying tong iddle-i po! |

You have to put some black tape over the very bright blue LED standby light though. It flashes brightly during the night if they do a download. BTW this sets is not 16:9 it is 16:10, therefore in my opinion is not fit for purpose. -- ^..^ This is Kitty. Copy and paste Kitty into your signature to help her wipe out Bunny's world domination. |

What Peter wants used to exist, I used a JVC 21F1 with a timer to wake me up in the morning. Obviously that would be far to big and old for his requirements. -- ^..^ This is Kitty. Apart from that it's a nice little set, my aunt has one in her kitchen. Proper 16:9 too. -- ^..^ This is Kitty. OTOH I would use the existing plugin if the set had no timer of its own and came on when power was applied, instead of going into standby. -- Peter Ying tong iddle-i po! |

To the OP: you can get third party remotes with a built in clock
that lets you use it to program recording. It can also switch on a TV. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |
