I have just received my new white sky card. Was going to give my old
blue sky card to a friend but unsure how long it will work for.

Any ideas?

Sky updated all cards/software prior to issuing the new cards. All
channels now state wrong card for this set top box...

All cards ? because I've just swapped two FTV cards between boxes, with no effect.

If Sky do stop them working as FTV cards, they will stop working
regardless of what box they are in. The FTV functionality does
not require a card to be paired to a given box..

I imagine the entire release of cards could be effectively killed
by a firmware update as AFAIR happened last time.

I've been using my subscription card ( family pack as was) in a
standard digibox I bought from a charity shop for several months now
and I've never had any on screen nagging to match the card to the box.

This is something that doesn't get mentioned often, but there is
(or was) a DPA issue about re-selling cards.

Mine was an ex-subscription card, and by the time I got
it, it would not decode any subscription channels purely FTV.

However, connecting a phone line and navigating

interactive
sky customer services
view your statement
dial
it would bring up a profile of the original owner.

I just tried it again and it says something like can't connect to service
so it might not be so much of an issue.
