Along with selling unknowing consumers $80 HDMI cables that they could
buy online for a few bucks, HDTV retailers other longtime scam is to
boost the brightness in their stores (including on the sets
themselves) to entice buyers.

I didn't understand the article. I would think that the lower the
ambient lighting, the brighter the display looks. I think the bright
ambient lighting is not nefarious but just to help customers from
tripping.

Well, I have Samsung HDTV that has 2 settings, one for stores, and
the other for home. The set up directions say that the first thing you
should do is to reset it for the home, because it comes set for the
store.

They will misadjust the settings on sets that they want to look poor
compared to a model they are pushing, & you should also try to look
at the input wiring & signal source; sometimes you're comparing coax
to HDMI.
